New internet problem...warning?

tdaniel

>I just had 2 emails come in that could not be deleted. These were all letters and symbals....no words. I used Mozilla Thunderbird to see them without opening them but after clicking to send them to the trash bin they would not go; then I tried deleting them and they would not delete. Finally I exitted the program and then brought it back up. This time they were gone. What is going on here?

>Terry, I don't know what caused your problem. In the last couple of days I've started receiving spam that appears to have been read. I use Netscape Composer and unread items are in bold. This bothers me because they don't stand out and it would then be easy to open in error when a prior message is deleted.

I thought there was a special place in hell for whoever invented bubble packs but they are a saint compared to these idiots that are just out to do harm. Regular spammers are bad enough but they are easy to delete or filter against.

>I appreciate Earthlink's SpamBlocker. Nothing gets through to my computer unless the sender is personally pre-approved. I can also check everything while its still on the ISP's server before it comes through to me in Outlook; have caught and blocked severel "strange" messages from friends that way. I then notified them by other means and each turned out to be an attempt to spread an "infection" through their address books. They actually thank me for the notice so they could get their machines back in order.

>That's some of the lastest series of spam, this coming from Germany. I use the remote mail viewer on my ISP to look at the mail and delete anything that has a strange heading or "other" types of adds.

As the more holes that are found in micro$soft code, the more of this type you will see. Sadly the volume of traffic is going up, the available bandwidth going down and the "kids" that are into the spam and virus activity is on the rise. There is a university in one of the European countries that even has/had classes on writing viruses.

The only real way to protect yourself is to use one of the Unix variants, such as Linux. These are pretty impervious to such problems. The downside is there is a learning curve from Windowz to the Linux desktop(s). But well worth it in the longrun. I run multisystems on my home machine and use Linux anytime I want to get on the 'net.

>For those Windoze users who want to test drive Linux, I would suggest either Ubuntu or Knopppix. You can boot the Knoppix CD and run the applications without ever writing anything to your existing hard drive. Ubuntu is a desktop distribution, no development tools, that is suppose to be very friendly and easy to install.

I think you'll find most of the Linux distributions relatively easy to install and getting on the internet once installed is easy. (Hey! I'm doing it right now!) SuSE is another very strong and well supported distribution, but usually you would want to buy SuSE. The others are FREE. There is a FREE version of SuSE, but it lacks quite a bit. To get an idea of just how many different and varied distributions of Linux are available (including the ones used by NASA and the one certified by the NSA) check out the link below.

>Cool link, I will have to check those other distos out. I use SuSe right now, but have six other different distrobutions. It is not the most user friendly to install, but I am a systems programmer and preferr that type of process.

You are correct about the Knoppix. I have used it to recover data when my Win2k system ate itself (not a virus, just microbrains bug). It was the only think I had that would copy files from NTFS to Fat32. So, its part of my wyndowz recovery kit now. Its a great tool for those that want to take a look at the Linux world.

>I keep putting off a Gentoo installation on my AMD64 box. (Currently running Suse 9.1 Pro.) I think Gentoo is the easiest to maintain and fastest performance-wise, but it is a good chunk of work to install. Mandrake (Mandreva?) is a good full package as well.

You think Suse was a tough install? I found it quite easy, aside from what they intentionally broke like DVD playing and CD writing - to varying degrees. Still, I have MPlayer running just fine now.

P.S. We use Gentoo at the office as our development platform. Cancer diagnostic/research tools.

>I have been using Eudora e-mail for at least 8 years. You can turn off the "viewer" so all you see is text. That way there is never a "call" to the 'net for images or web bugs. Its junk mail filter is adaptive and works great. One thing to NEVER enable/allow is MAPI (allowing other programs to send mail thru it).

>I'm NO FAN of Billy boy but it's not Microsoft holes! I use proper settings in IE & Outlook Express, keep the OS patched, use proper security utilities and I have absolutely NO problems. The problem is lazy perople who don't take the innitiative to set their systems up right. Linix is also full of holes as is the Mac OS. So is Mozilla FIrefox, Opera and all the rest (read the security zines). They are simply not targeted nearly as frequently because their distribution is so much smaller than Windows. But they are targeted to some extent and they are hit, usually quite severly because of the false sense of invunerability.
