Catch me if you can

Mike Schwing from Md.

>A couple were driving down a country road when the wife glanced over and saw a chicken running alongside of the car. Honey, look at this! she said. He looked over and said Ill be damned, that thing is doing 40mph! Lets see if he can keep up.. So he sped up to 60, and darned if the chicken didnt pull right up alongside the car. Then the chicken looked over, winked, and sped off and turned down a dirt road. I gotta follow that chicken!

So they followed it to a farm where there were hundred of chickens flying all over the place at high rates of speed. This is incredible! And with that he got out the car and searched for the farmer. He asked the the farmer to tell him about these incredible chickens, and the farmer said Well, one day one of our chicken eggs hatched and damned if a 3 legged chicken didnt come out. Me and my bright ideas, I thought shoot, people like the drumsticks best anyway, Im gonna breed me a whole farm full of these things! Im gonna be a millionaire!

Thats really neat said the farmer. How do they taste?

Farmer says Damned if I know. I cant catch any of the suckers!

Made of one piece of tupelo. Anyone ever thinks about turning tupelo - forget it. It sands to shape on the lathe better than it turns. Hollowed, carved, textured and painted. About 6 or 7" tall. One of my pieces for the instant gallery at KC.

All comments welcomed.

Thanks all

Mike Schwing from Md.

>People ask me all of the time how I think of the things I make. In this instance it was the result of a business meeting. Whenever I conduct a meeting I start it off by telling a joke. I was scouring my brain for a good, CLEAN one, because this meeting audience contained a few Congresscritters, and couldn't think of one. So I called my Dad, and he told me this old joke about the 3 legged chicken. I'd heard it before, but as soon as he started telling it to me, out of nowhere in my brain came the 3 legged chicken egg. Like a lightbulb! Ding!

Not all of them come that way. The EYEpods were the result of a dream, I literally woke up with the image in my brain. Some are results of lunchtime collaboration with coworkers, and some are the result of conversations with folks online, like Keith, Mark, Andi, and a bunch of other people, too.

I didn't really spend much time on this particular guy because its summer and I'm rushing to finalize my KC instant gallery selections. But it was fun to see it emerge from just a paper sketch into a 3D object.

Keith - regarding the hat. My original idea was to have the top of the egg cracked where it had been hollowed and a yellow periscope poking out looking forward. I was walking through a Michael's Crafts last week and I spotted this little hat. Immediately I knew it was going on top of that egg.

In the last 20 hours, since I posted this thing here and elsewhere, I've been called crazy, nuts, and insane more times than I can count.

Thats what they said about Dali

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Salvador Dali, absolutely one of my favorite artists. Extremely cool imagination, but was he nuts or did he just see things a little differently?

I get a real kick out of using my imagination to drum up an idea I haven't seen done before and then challenging myself to see if I can make it.

I'd like to nudge the members of my turning club in the same direction occasionally with a challenge or something that wouldn't require too many specific tools. Any ideas on that guys?

>One of the techniques Dali used to come up with his ideas was brilliant. He would set himself up in his favorite chair to doze off. He would hold a fork in his hand hanging over the side of his chair. On the floor under his hand he put a plate. When he dozed off he would drop the fork, the sound of it hitting the plate would wake him up. Hopefully he was dreaming at that point of sleep. He would then sketch what he was dreaming if he though that it would make a good piece of art. There has been some research done on dreaming. It doesn't seem to matter how free of thinker you are. The least imaginative people have dreams as bizarre as the most imaginative folks. Most dreams are forgotten soon after awakening. If you have an inspiring dream, it's best to sketch or write down the idea before you lose it. Some people even keep paper and a pencil on thier night stand for that purpose. I should do that one of these days.

>Mike, I've been off the computer for a few days soaking up a bunch of hours in the shop...and I must say, I'm glad I popped in this morning to see your chicken! Have not seen any running around my shop, however. I think I may need a hallucinogen to come up with some of the things you do! I applaud your creativity! It must feel great to let it go like that! I really feel sometimes like I have a big cork in my creativity and need something to get it to POP! I can't wait to see your work in Kansas. I'm bringing an extra card for my digital camera because I know it's going to fill up fast!

Crazy Chicken!!

Jen :)
