Not with my fingers !

Fred in NC

>I designed. and my machinist friend helped me build this set of aluminum jaws for my Supernova2. It is intended to allow access to the inside of a tube-like form (open at both ends) so the inside can be sanded and finished. It cannot be held with the regular jaws because of the shape, and it would be too close to the chuck to work in the inside.

The wood part can be made to any shape needed.

When I first saw this spinning around, I decided not to hold the sandpaper with my fingers, but put foam backed sandpaper on a paddle. Well, my lathe can be run at very low speeds anyway.

>That thing is scary. Have you thought of finding something like a piece of inner tube than would fit over it as a sort of safety sleeve? Some sort of tube or even tape. Duct tape fixes everything.

I made a set of hooks for my Cole Jaws. Eight bent straps about an inch wide and four inches long. Dipped the ends in rubber. I can extend them out to the limit of my lathe (16") and grip a bowl. They hold much better than the little rubber bumpers, but they are scary too.

>Yes, I considered the safety factor. Long tools and long sanding paddle . . .

Inner tube is a great idea! Thanks !!!

>Fred,

Another idea is to paint the parts that stick out white or some other bright color. Makes them easier to see when they are spinning rapidly.

I don't think that works. I tried painting the buttons on my homemade cole jaws red so I wouldn't stick my hands in there. They just dissappeared in a blur when I was running the lathe. Oh well it was worth a try.

>Hi John,

I think red is too dark. You have to use white or yellow.

I did something similar on the three-jaw machinists chuck that I used for years, except I used white tape. Worked well until the tape came off.
