>I am considering the purchase of a laser guided hollowing set up. I own the mini and 1/2" sets of hollowing tools by kelton at present.

Any suggestions or comments on these systems would be greatly appreciated.

I built the one that Bruce Hoover designed for his article in American Woodturner. It was very easy to build. I'm not happy with the cheap lazer I bought but it does work, most of the time. The set up is easy to adjust and works quite well.

>John,

I'm interested as well since I broke through another one yesterday. How do they work? And is there a plan on the board how to build one?

Thanks

I don't know if there is a plan on the web somewhere. Lazer rigs aren't perfect. You must have the line between the lazer and the cutting tip perpendicular to the area that you are cutting. If you don't you will still cut through the side(or bottom). That's why the swiveling tips are handy for lazer thickness operations. If you don't make your pieces very thin you can get buy without adjusting the lazer but if you want them really thin then this is critical.

>I have the large Kelton rig and love it. I use 3-4 times a week. Get tired turning bowls and have to do a hollow form.

Just be care full when you set the rig up. Make sure of your measurements. The laser will keep you from cutting through the side. Also make sure all the set screws are tight.

>Check the articles section here on Wood Central. Al Crandall has an article on building a hollowing system for the Jet Mini. I built one and it works great. Actually used it today, May make a modification or two.
