Fungicide results, Day One

Gary Evans, Tallassee, TN

>Hi all,

I have been looking for an alternative to chlorine bleach for de-staining some of my holly that got wet right after I cut it.

I mentioned this fact to my wife and she says, "Why not use the vegetable wash, it's supposed to have a fungicidal action."

So, today I mixed up 2 gal of the stuff and dipped my stained pieces. Here are some pics showing the stain before dipping, 3 hours after dipping and 5 hours after dipping. It's too bad I can't post all three pic's together. The results are very encouraging. I'll keep you posted.

These pieces sat in the sun the whole time, which could be a contributing factor, but all surfaces showed similar fading of the stain. Also, I have a control piece which sat in the sun without dipping, and the color change is not apparent on it.

>Thanks, Dick,

I have had a sinking feeling for the past couple of weeks as I watched these blanks green up. The trick is whether they will stay white as time goes on.

>Hi Barry,

I'm just hoping I can keep it turned back until the symposiums this fall. I feel like I'm walking a tightrope between keeping the blanks dry enough to prevent stain, but not so dry that they start to crack up.

>Hi Jim,

I haven't cut into one of the stained pieces, but I would say that the stain is all on the surface. I had made an endcut from a piece that was stained on the end when I first got the holly and discovered that the stain had not penetrated very far at all.

The product I am experimenting with is a fruit and vegetable wash that my wife sells. It's made by a company called Sunrider International; one of those multi-level marketing companies. 15 ml. makes one gallon of dipping solution. I am checking now to see what my price will be. I hope to sell some at the fall symposiums if it continues to work as well as it has so far.
