Willow Tree

Bruce in Saint John N.B. Canada

>A friend of mine called me to-day and offered me the wood from his weeping willow tree that he had just cut down. I waisted no time getting over there as apparently the tree surgeons had their eye on it for next winters fire wood. I got ten pieces of timber 10 to 14 inches in diameter and about 16 inches long. This afternoon I cut the pit out and sealed the ends as I don't have the time right now to rough turn them. I wonder is there anyone out there who has tried turning bowls out of weeping willow? The wood reminds me of poplar, real white in color. It will be interesting to see what it turns like and what the finished bowl looks like.

>about a year ago I had access to several pieces on weeping willow and turned several large bowls. the tree was cut down because it was full of beatles. this made several interesting bowls with enough holes in them that looked like it had been shot with a shot gun. I came in the house with one of the bowls to show my wife and while she was looking at it one of the beatles came crawling out. all he could do was go round and around. made my day!!!!! the willow made some nice bowls mostly a light tan color because of the beatle tracks. It turns real easy and finishes just as easy.

>I once read an article that said it was good for making cricket bats and was used to make wooden legs for sailers as it did not drag them under or float so well as to push their heads under if they went overboard but was light and strong for use.
