Hey, that's a loaded question? What application will the pads be used for; bowls, hollowforms, external, internal sanding? There are so many sanding pads available, and plans to make homemade versions, that the choice is not as easy as I would like. I know you just said "pads", so:
I have the Tim Skilton pads, purchased from http://www.turningwood.com/. With appropriate use (low speeds on both lathe and drill) they have lasted about 2 years now with little signs of wear. I use them about once or twice a week for about 15 minutes.
I have 2 inertial type sanders constructed from available material. Here's the original designs they were built from:
http://www.hdv.net/ - look under "Tools and Tips", you'll find them at the bottom of the page.
I'm also currently working on building the pads/disks shown in the recent issue of American Woodturner (the AAW magazine). The author of the article is a member at our club. We're doing a group buy/build, so hopefully I'll add a set of those to my sanding arsenal within a few weeks.
There are also different "pads" available for internal sanding on hollowforms. I've made an inertial sander mounted on a drill bit extension for that type of work, as well as a power sanding "bulb" of foam and velcro. The bulb isn't working to well due to the foam, I'll try to score some of the scraps from the previously mentioned group buy to work on this project.
Good luck!

They also have awsome pricing on intermediate H&L pads, both round and wave.
