mesquite (stained hands?)

ken chase

>After working my first mesquite bowl I noted my hands were stained a dark gray color, mostly the left. The stain would not come off with boraxo soap or hand cleaner. Is this a common problem? What should I do to remove the stain? I'm thinking I should wear gloves today.

suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

>Cut a lemon in half and rub the stain. This works for Walnut so I think it would work for Mesquite.

>Ken,

That stain is from the tannic acid in the wood and mesquite has a high tannin content. It happens when the moisture in the wood and on your hands touch the steel of your gouge. Lemon juice will remove the stain.

>You can also use this effect to your benefit. Soak a piece of steel wool in vinegar overnight and then use the vinegar as a "magic" stain to darken tannic woods (like oak). ...Gary

>Thanks for the tip Gary. I'm picking up some oak from a friend later this month. Never turned it before.
