new stubby lathe finally here

Sascha

>oh boy what a day. i got my Stubby 1000 delivered yesterday, unpacked it, cleaned the gunk off and set it in it's new place.........by myself. i just took a few pieces off and it was ok, but just the base alone is 400 pounds. the whole thing is about 800#. man i love this thing. i did have a few problems to get it running, i had to disconnect the cable from the controller to the motor take some wire mesh off and put it back on, that was today, so i just heard the sound of my new lathe spinning tonight. it's awesome, put a really unbalanced piece on and started the lathe. at around 600rpm i noticed a bit of wobble, the nova only handled something like this at 300 rpm ish.

the newer stubbys come with a digital readout.

can't wait to turn something really big

That would be the only upgrade I would consider, going from my 750 to a 1000. I really like the looks of your base. Congratulations, you are going to love it.

>Sascha, that is one of the best looking lathes out there I think. If I ever sell my General....which will probably happen when pigs fly, unless I hit the lottery...this is the machine I would want to have. I turned on one for a week at Arrowmont and loved it except for the stand. The one I was using had the splayed legged stand and my foot was constatnly wanting to be where the leg of the stand was. Your stand looks like it might not be an issue.

Congratulations! It sure is beautiful!

>My issue with the 1000 is that it is more unstable than my 750 stand- the plate is hard to level, and no concrete slab is that flat! And with the adjustable legs on the 750 stand you can both level and adjust height as much as necessary, and my Studly doesn't move unless I mount a BIG out of balance chunk!

>mine is actually pretty flat, just a few shims and it was good, but i'll see over time if i need to level more

Leveling

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Sascha,

I found that using roofing shingles, grit side down, under the feet are perfect for fine tuning the leveling of my lathe. A couple of them under each set of feet worked wonders.

Sascha

>hey jennifer, my stand actually doesn't have feet, just a solid metal plate, so a few shims were good, but if i feel the need to do better, i need to figure out how it's done best. the shingle idea sounds good though

>Nice. I hope you like it as much as I do my 750 which I got from John Jordan/Bill Rubenstein early this year. Can't find any defects in quality or design.

PS Is that a bit of Cosmoline you missed on the banjo locking handle?

>It took me all day to get my 750 home from Roadway Express, into my shop, cleaned of Cosmoline and ready-to-run. I disassembled it in the back of my father-in-law's pickup truck in a cool January breeze with temps in the 40's. It took me much longer than an hour to get all the Cosmoline cleaned away with mineral spirits. But it was well worth the trouble.
