Help! Nova 3K Broke?

Help! Nova 3K Broke?

TomW in SouthJersey

>Tonight while turning a small Buckeye burl my Nova 3000 started making an increasingly louder grinding noise. When I opened the belt/pulley area the pulley that comes from the motor is pushed against the side of the compartment toward the tailstock end.

I know the manual is around but has this happened to anyone else? I am hoping it is just a re-adjustment and alignment and tightening of the pulleys that is needed.

Any advice or experience with this?

>Sounds like the set screw came loose. Reposition the pulley and tighten the set screw very firmly. Then, if it doesn't already have a back up screw, install one. When jammed together the two set screws will never back off and loose adjustment.

>I believe there was a post on the Nova Owners site (MSN) a while back where several people had the same problem; it seems the set screws vibrate loose over time and cause this situation. I've taken to checking mine every so often just in case.

>I went over to the Nova group and there were two suggestions for the problem. One is to use Lock-tite on the grub screws. The other was to replace the grub screw with two shorter ones stacked one on the other. This locks them in place but also makes it possible to remove them if you need to. Good Luck.

>Thanks. I found the manual and adjusted the pulley. All seems fine. The belt broke as soon as I put it back together but luckily I saw it fraying and had a spare on hand.

Its humming along nicely now.

Thanks again,

Tom
