Stihl chainsaw- How do I adjust the bar oil amount

Al Crandall --NE of Indy--

>I put a new drive sprocket kit on my old 028 Super recently. In the process of getting the old sprocket off I had to remove a gear which was attached to a 1/2" dia acme screw which I am pretty sure was the oil pump. Fired it up tonight and checked the oil flow against the side of a log. I saw very little slinging off the bar end. I removed the bar and chain and ran it with the sprocket cover off. There was a small amount of oil being pumped into the oil slot. I have never tried this before so I assumed that this was the proper amount of oil. I made sure the oil hole in the bar was clear and reassembled the saw. After one tank of gas, the oil reservoir was only half empty. Normally it is almost all gone after one tank of gas, and the oil slinging off the bar is quite noticeable. What do I do to get more oil flow? It was working great before the sprocket kit installation. The on line manual from Stihl is no help at all. Al

One guess

>There might be a screw on the bottom of the saw body for adjusting the oil flow. Close to the sprocket side.

FWIW...

>When I bough my Stihl 390, the dealer adjusted everything including the oil delivery and gave it a good test run. I only go thru 1/2 a tank of oil per one tank of gas. I would guess that's normal.

>Hi Al, I have an old 028 super...there is a plastic cover on mine near the bar. Prying off the cover reveals a screw adjustment....

>One other thing to check - if debris gets into the oil tank somehow it can clog up the filter/passageway. This happened to my Stihl 025 once. I emptied the oil and rinsed the tank several times with kerosene and blew it out with compressed air. That fixed it.

My Stilh always uses nearly one full tank of oil to one tank of gas. The manual indicated this was normal.

>My Sihl doesn't sling oil at all which sort of concernerd me, but apparently it is OK. I use about 3/4 of the oil reservoir per tank of fuel.

>Carole,

My instructions said after each filling point the bar tip a few inches away from a smooth surface (such as a board) and rev the engine to full rpm. Kind of scary running any engine full rpm but these engines are evidently built for it. It should not sling oil but make a fine line. The book said to look for progressively MORE oil in the line since the initial bit could be from oil already on the chain.

Actually, if you typically add oil directly to the chain it will sling most of that off at first, so I rev a bit then move to a clean spot to check for delivery from the tank. BTW, I'm not sure if everyone oils the chain directly after sharpening and at fillup, but I was taught that this is important for long chain/bar life.

>Actually, Peter, your chain and bar will be happier, particularly in heavy cutting where the bar is buried in the log, if the oil flow is set up to use a full tank of oil per tank of gas.

By the way, I got my mail yesterday. Thanks a bunch.

>I have 2 ea of the 310 and they run about 3/4 oil to a tank of gas. I think you are running low and may have a bar problem if not fixed. Check the dealer. Try cleaning the oil line.

>Hi Al,

Wish I had an answer for you....I've never adjusted mine....nor have I done the "oil Spray" test....I will next time though. BTW...I have your chainsaw wrench....it was left here at the last get together....I'll trade it back to ya for my flat box tool rest :)

>John, I will try the spray test on a clean board next time I start the saw. I am always careful to keep the inlet and channel on the bar clean, but it sure looks like it could glog up very quickly in just a short amount of time!

Re: Resolution of oil problems.

Al Crandall --NE of Indy--

>Thanks for your responses. Keith, I found the screw under the plastic cap, but it wouldn't budge. Didn't seem like an adjustment for the flow. I put a call in to the dealer this morning, but he was out delivering a trailer all day. Returned my call about 5 pm. He said that he wasn't aware of an adjustment on that saw, and that a lot of models aren't adjustable. Stihl says that 1/2 tank of oil per tank of gas is acceptable, according to my dealer. He suggested that I use a very fine wire to roto-rooter back through the oil hole in the slot if I thought anything might have gotten in there while it was apart. He also suggested that I check the bar temp. after an extended rip cut. If it isn't getting very hot, then its getting enough lube. I just got worried about the perceived change after doing a re-build of which I wasn't experienced. Until the bar turns blue, I'll quit worrying. I used 3 more tanks today and the oil consumption seems to be creeping back up. Thanks again, everyone. Al

Jen, keep the wrench. I bought another. I'm drawing a blank about the box rest. Email me and jog my memory.

>One far out suggestion: I was amazed when, using a dental pick to clean the bar, I discovered how much sawdust in the groove had jammed into the oil feed hole in the base of that groove at the near end of the bar, top and bottom. I clean it out regularly now.
