Tip: Not a turning tool but...

Mark Kauder. Phenix City, AL

>As many of you know, I am president of my turning club (and do most of the other work, too). We just bought a bunch of turning DVD/Tapes, and I needed something like library checkout cards on them. I could not find what I was looking for, but got what I need at Office Depot. They have small self-stick plastic pockets, advertised as for 3.5" computer diskettes. $5 for 10. They fit great on the Tape/DVD cases (and books), and a 3"x5" card fits great in them.

That is all well and good you say......but around the shop I found a wonderful use for them. I don't know about you, but I am constantly looking for a pencil. I have tons of them, but I lay them down and they get buried, or fall on the floor, etc. These self-stick pockets stick great to the side of my lathe, drillpress, TS, etc and pencils fit just fine.

Just a thought.

They would work great for allen wrenches as well, but I use rare earth magnets for metal tools (chuck keys, knockout bars, etc).

I leave pencils everywhere. About once a week I go around and pick them all up, fill up the drawer and then during the next week will empty the drawer again and the process starts all over.

>Thanks for the tips Mark. How did your group decide which turning videos to buy? We have a new AAW group in N. WI, Nortwood Turners, we now have enough money in the bank to do the same.

You might donate them to the public schools. As recently as just few years ago the schools were still using them to store individual student's work and were glad to get more. It may be hard to imagine for those of us who drop $100-$10000 on a hobby with barely a thought, but some families have a difficult time buying even basic school supplies.

It's the non-reusable CDs that are practically worthless! We've used them for swimming pool toys, shooting targets, art projects, and car jewelry (with adhesive-backed magnetic strips). But here's a CD-based contest you can conduct around the water cooler in your own office - see who can roll a CD the longest distance down a long carpeted hallway. (harder than it might seem)

George Van - Videos

Mark Kauder, Phenix City, AL

>George,

I saw your post on videos last night, but did not have the time to respond then.

Frankly, I picked them. We have a club filled with new turners. Way too often, I have demonstrators that fullfil MY desire to learn, and not their needs. Recently, we decided that at least for the next year or so, to do beginners demos 3 months out of 4 (basic bowl turning, blank preparation, sharpening, etc). SO, when I picked the videos, I picked basic subject matter. Here are some of the videos we have (some are donated).

Bill Grumbine's video

The Skew Chisel - The Darkside/The Sweetside -Alan Lacer

The Son of the Skew - Alan Lacer

A Lesson with Chris Stott - First Steps in Woodturning

The Slim-line Pen With Russ Fairfield

Finishing Secrets I & II & III - Russ Fairfield

A Course on Spindle Turning - Ray Jones

Segmented Patterns - Kurt Theobald

Woodturning - Getting Started Right - Alan Lacer

From the Tree to The Table - Mike Mahoney

Turning Green Wood - Michael ODonnell

>Thanks Mark,

Our new group, 32 members, also has a lot of new members and our idea of demos directed at them for the majority of the demos is a good idea. I will bring it up to our group at the next meeting.

I will take your list with me for discussion. I can see that you cover a variety of interest and learning tools. I will ask for donations also.

I will be happy when Russ' video is available to all.

George
