Mama and the 3 bear cubs

Molly Winton

>Maple burl. Stands about 5" tall, and 3 1/2" diameter. Finished with Danish oil, and will be buffed after it dries completely. I wanted to find another animal design to incorporate into my turnings. I discovered (much to my surprise) that I can also draw bears! There's a Mama bear and three cubs circling the form. Top and bottom are branded in an asymetrical 3 sided patch. This is one of those pieces you really have to hold and rotate to get it's full effect. Two dimensional photography cannot capture it well. Just might have to bring this to KC. Comments very welcome.

I really like that. It lets the form of the piece stand out. I like the texture on the bears also.

>How cute is that!!! Molly this one is adorable! I love it. Being a Mama bear myself I certainly can connect with this one :)

Another winner Molly. Nice form and as always your branding and burning is top notch.

>Hi Molly,

Beary, Beary Nice work. :)

I really like the burning effect you are getting on these forms. Also the detail you are able to achive around the legs and back is really what makes it jump off the screen to me. It looks very 3D on my monitor. Another winner in my book!!

Best wishes,

Dave

Well Done!

>Molly,

I have to say that these are my new favorites. The excellent job you did on the bears (the texture on the fur is amazing) is accented by the overall exquisite form of the piece.

I think what I like most about your work is the fact that you didn't go overboard with surface enhancements. You can still see the figure in the wood.

Thanks for posting these and inspiring us all.

See ya around,

Dominic

>Really nice work Molly. I have been enjoying viewing all of your works. I want to to eventually try and use a woodburner in the future. Keep up the fantastic work

>Beautiful work Molly. Forgive my ignorance. Whaat is the process of branding? Is it carved into the wood or added to? I haven't seen this before and quite impressed.

Thanks

>Hi Ken, branding is woodburning with a brand, rather than a woodburning pen. I make my own brands, and in this case (the top and bottom of the hollow form) it's a piece of nichrome wire that's been wound around a nail. I attach the brand to one of my pyrography pens that has the capability to interchange the tips. The brand is then touched to the wood in the pattern seen. Hope that makes sense. I've written an article for Woodturning Design magazine on how I do it, and supposedly it's to be printed in their next issue.
