finishing question

>I was told by a fellow turner that he used boiled linseed oil exclusively on his items. I have used it but am not satisfied with the results I get. I put it on a couple of small items and after 24 hrs. I put a coat of Myland's wax on but am still not satsfied with the result. Has anybody used linseed oil as a sealer and applied other finishes over it or just used it as a finish itself?

I sure do like to turn but finding finishes that I am satisfied with seems to be that needle in the haystack. Thanks for any reply.

>I'm in the same boat as you. I'm having a hard time with finishes. I have done CA finishes that looked great...on pens. And water-based poly laquers on small items, including pens (I liked that better than the CA) .

But I've been trying to do a tung oil finish based on Russ Fairfield's instructions. Of course I don't have the exact same products...although I am using a 100% pure tung oil...but I am trying to use as close to the same procedure as I can. And while I get a nice durable satin finish after about 4 applications, I can't seem to get a gloss finish off the tung oil.

This is one subject I'd sure like to see explored in more detail...maybe a primer for beginners and then maybe some structured advice to take a guy into more advanced finishes.

I keep an eye out for any thread that delas with finishes though

>Try Watco on you bowls. Easy and looks great after a good buffing.

>For a nice gloss finish, try using russ's french polishing technique, can use it right over the top of the blo, after it drys that is.

>I use Minwax Polyurethane, not the wiping variety, just the kind you brush on. I sand to 320 or 400 grit. Then, I brush on a heavy coat and apply more to keep it wet for about 10 minutes. Then, I wipe of the excess and let dry overnight. Two or 3 coats applied in this manner is all I usually need.

>Thanks for the info. I often use Minwax Poly and it has given me the best finish so far.
