The latest AAW Journal

Bill Grumbine (Kutztown PA)

>Greetings all

In the past, even the recent past, I have been critical of the AAW and some of the attitudes which I have encountered over the years, and I was particularly critical of the last issue of the journal, to the point where I was wondering why I was spending my money. Well as I used to tell the people who were unfortunate enough to work for me, I will say what I don't like, but I will also say what I do like.

The current issue of the journal arrived a couple of days ago, and while mail delivery once something gets to the house is almost as bad as the P.O. itself, I found it and got to read it last night. I was very impressed with the articles, and it was a truly enjoyable experience. I would like to commend all those who had a hand in putting this one together, and may we see many more like it.

>I agree Bill. I thought it was a particularly enjoyable issue as well. Many of the recent journals have had a distinct air of superiority about them, and have paid homage to the same people over and over again. This one felt more "down to earth". The Masons will be critiquing the instant gallery at the KC symposium this year. I don't recall the article stating that, but I saw it on the AAW website.

I especially enjoy it when we see names, work, and the faces of our friends here at WC and WOW, and sometimes it seems that I know someone on every page!

>Could not agree more! I think the quality has steadily improved. I found myself reading each article in this particular issue with interest. Lot's of good how-to's with some interesting twists. I continue to be amazed at the creativity of this group and the willingness to share information. Nick Cook has consistently contributed to the magazine by sharing excellent projects that help in our development but also are quite practical. I particularly enjoyed the article on Dave Lancaster. I visited him in Maine last summer and he is simply an animal. His bowl production is awesome. He'll be demoing at KC. Check him out.

Bill, thanks for lifting up one of positive parts of our group.

I agree... Great Issue

>I also read it last night and mentioned to my wife it was the most useful issue of the journal I had seen. It is a good balance of hands on and art. The AAW is to be complemented for their new direction with the journal.

>It took only a week to make it here this time. Much better than the 3 weeks it has been taking.

>I wonder how many of us have taken the time to wirght or email the AAW about our likes and dislikes about the journal, or anything else they do.

Trying to read our minds is a guessing game at best, and they can't fix it if they don't know it's broke. So let them know what you think, good or bad.

Well said. I know for a fact that they don't hear from that many people. Better yet send in an article or idea that you think might benefit others. John

>I agree. The last issue was a good one and had the types of articles that I enjoy reading. The "artsy" woodturnings have a place and they are beautiful, and I have the utmost respect for those who do them. But I suspect the vast majority of woodturners who subscribe to the AAW Journal may not be at quite that level yet. I hope the folks at AAW will keep the journal "real" for us David Ellsworth-John Jordan-Rude Osolnik wannabee's.
