>I took a week off of my day job (turning vacation) and here are some the pieces I was able to finish. Mainly make collars and buff. From left to right, back row, the woods are olive/ironwood collar, carob, Tasmanian rose myrtle/ebony collar and maple burl/ebony collar. Front row left to right, osage orange, pacific yew/ebony collar, maple burl/ebony collar and mesquite. I will post individual photo later as to not hog the photo space. All are destine for galleries. Most are finished with General Finishes Seal-a-Cell. As always, all comments are welcome.

>Wow Paul. That is a fine mess of work you have there! How many coats of finish applied? Sanded before buffed?

>Thanks, Mike. Most have four or five coats of finish. This will be my "gift shop" and "craft gallery" finish. It's shinier than I normally like, but I hope it will hold up to constant handling. The pieces finished with seal-a-cell were lightly sanded with 1000 grit in between coats to knock off any nubs. The olive and yew pieces were finished with wipe-on poly and sanded with 600 grit between coats. The last coat was lightly sanded with 1000 grit before buffing.

Hi Paul

Dominic Greco at home in Richboro, PA

>Paul,

This is a very nice assortment of excellently executed hollow forms. I like the Osage Orange one best (one of my favorite woods).

I have to say that your pieces definitely have a "gallery quality" finish. I really like it. It almost appears like you used spray lacquer.

In your post, you refer to it as General Finishes Seal-a-Cell. I looked it up using Yahoo.com and came up with that link.

From the description on the website, it sounds a lot like Woodcraft's Urethane Oil finish. Do you think they are the similar? I have used Woodcraft's finish in the past. But I never tried sanding with 1000 grit sandpaper between coats. Or taking it over (2) coats. I have to say that it looks like the results are worth the work. Think it would work?

See ya around,

Dominic

>Hi Dominic,

I have never used the Woodcraft brand. Could be the same stuff though. Made by General Finishes and packaged for Woodcraft.

>Hi Keith,

Here is a photo of the piece. I haven't taken it off the faceplate yet because I think I might be able to finish it by making a collar to fit the new larger opening. It will probably end as a house piece or a gift.

When I roughed it out. It had ring shake with a white fungus in it. The piece came flying out at a certain point. I decided not to glue it back in because of the fungus. I thought the void would make an interesting feature.

And then I went and busted out the top...
