Keeping maple white

>I have been using Danish Oil, and though I like the finish it tends to "amberize" everything. I have a bowl turned from maple burl (thanks John K. Jordan!) and I would like to preserve the true light colors but still have the satiny feel that I get with oil. Any suggestions?

>Carole I also use lacquer with good results. If you use sanding sealer first the finish can be nice and "soft" without much plastic feel.

>Very nice piece. I'm getting ready to try bleach for the first time. Any advice? I'm surprised that the bleach didn't change the red streaks on your piece. Is that because you used a weak solution? I'm hoping to make my piece totally white. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ric

>John, I have not yet tried laquer. Do you use a fancy spray gun, or will a can of spray laquer from the local hardware store work? I am going to try that on some scrap pieces and see what happens. Do you also use sanding sealer? I definitely do not want a high gloss finish.

>Carole,

I just had the same quandry about maple and solved it with Watco spray lacquer I found at Menards. I liked the results when I used it on some ambrosia maple.

>When you use the two part wood bleech use rubber or latex gloves. Don't let the bleech touch your skin, or clothes IT WILL BURN. If you do get some on you wash immediately. Don't wait wash immediately.

This is one of those times when you realy should read and follow the instructions on the lable.

Happy turning.
