What is juried work?

William

>Please pardon my ignorance on this subject. My future misses and I were looking through the booklet of the upcoming May Fair that will be in Allentown, Pa. and she came across a section about juried work. She asked me what that meant. I told her I think it means that your work is pre-judged and selected for show.

There have been a few threads on here about the subject of those who were selected to be judges and those who work went up before the judging body.

I think I gave her a close answer, but I wanted to be sure.

So how does that whole process play out? It seems to be one of the higher tier accomplishments that an artist obtains. Or so it seems.

The just curious :)

I'm a newbie at this

The show is comprised of works selected by two well known artists, from all of those submitted.

(I'm treating it as quite an accomplishment)

So I guess your description was right on, in this case at least.

>Hi William

Your answer was essentially correct. The jury process is one in which your work is judged for acceptability for a particular venue or organization. I have been juried into the PA Guild of Craftsmen, which means that I can enter their (local) shows with an application only. If I want to be able to enter the state shows, I have to either be juried in for each, or submit my work for the state jurying process.

I have also participated in other jurying events. Some are particular, and some seem to jury whether or not I have the entry fee in my pocket. I do not know how Mayfair works, although several of my friends and acquaintances have been there over the years. The big fence they are putting around the place this year is bound to have an effect on a lot of things, including next year's participants.

>Congrats Mike! I have seen a lot of your work on here and most definitely should be juried in!

And thanks for the answer

>The jury process is supposed to weed out lesser quality work/products to the standards of whomever is doing the selection. It is also used as a yardstick to the intended quality of a select audience of buyers by artisans, but it's all relative!

>And some have a theme such as "Return to the Land of Oz" for this years AAW symposium. Our own John Lucas' Tin Man was juried in.

I was really surprised. I've applied to this kind of juried show several times and only got accepted once before. I've been accepted to Juried craft shows several times but never anything as high as the AAW show.

I know Jamie will agree on this but if you want to enter a juried show good slides or digital images are a huge step toward getting in.
