>Gee, Carole, I can remember someone doing that some time back. Don't know if it was Jennifer, of just who. However, when I did my first one, I just took a look at the bowl and kind of pictured in my mind what would look right and just went ahead and did it. I flued a thin disk of wood to a block and bored a hole in it and then turned it to fit the hole in the form. I parted it off, glued it to the form and then rechucked the form and turned the colooar to match what I had envisioned. Seemed to come out ok. Just luck? I don't know. Maybe I am just good.(-;
Yuk, Yuk.
That should read "glued."

>lol! I have those nights! That is basically what I had come up with to do a collar but I didn't know if that was the "conventional" way of doing it or not. What type of glue do you use?

>Carol,
An email is on it's way to you as I write this. There was a PDF file composed by Art Liestman on the World of Woodturner's Website. I downloaded it, and emailed it off to you.
Funny that this file's author was Art. He is scheduled to instruct at a class I'm attending tomorrow.
See ya around,
Dominic

Thanks, Dominic!

>Carole:
Haven't done this myself but in John Jordan's video he parts away the end of the neck and turns it separately and glues it back on when he finished hollowing. He ten matches the wood grain. I know that is not a great description but hopefully will add something.
Good Luck

>Hi Carole, A couple of things I do...I always put a "step" in the collar that sits into the hole in the top of the vessel. This more than doubles the glue-surface area, and locates the collar exactly. I glue the collar on while the vessel is still on the lathe, it then serves as its own jam chuck. I can then turn and sand the collar right on the vessel.
I also orient the grain the same way to help prevent movement.
