TEK

>I posted earlier about doing volunteer work on the Settlers Cabin in the Flats in Cleveland. The Link is to that thread. I brought home some wood from the project. Most of the larger pieces are Ash. Im not sure what some of the other pieces are. I havent turned any ash yet, but Ive been told it is nice to work with. We used about 12 feet of the Ash log in the cabin and didnt need the remainder. That left me about 8 feet of log about 10 or 11 inches in diameter. That log has been lying in the pile for about 2 years. Many of the other logs (different species) are spalting and sprouting fungus. The Ash log showed no signs of degrading and the bark is still tight. It didnt even want to come off with a drawknife. Is Ash considered a rot resistant species?

What wood

tek-Brunswick, Ohio

>The wood in these pictures is from logs we took out of the cabin to replace. They have been air-drying as part of the cabin wall for about 28 years. Im not sure what kind of wood it is. The two pieces on the right may be beech or maple. It is very close grained; it has more of a yellow cast to it than I usually see in maple. It is not poplar it is too hard and has little brown flecks in the grain Ive never seen in poplar. The other wood ahs grain kind of like hickory but it is too dark and not that hard or heavy. It almost looks like Mesquite, but of course it isnt Mesquite. All the wood is local and I dont know of any Mesquite growing in Ohio and I dont think it is as hard as Mesquite. Any one what no hazard a guess as to what types of wood these are?
