I had not seen the 3rd example before. These are often talked about in photography at least in the serious books. How colors affect contrast and brightness of each other is also interesting.

In wood we seldom pay enough attention to how the contrast between two woods will enhance or hurt each other.

Negative spaces are also ignored. Negative spaces can are usually thought of as the space outside the vessel but they can be created by carving holes or natural defects in the wood and should be used to our advantage if we know to look for them.

When I was in art school (to many years ago) we had to full a sheet by rubbing charcoal over the whole area, then use a kneaded easer to "Draw" the highlights. Basiclly the same idea as carving areas in a vessel.

>In #3, I still see the yellow and grey even with the mask. In #2 I "see" the same color grey dots because, having seen it before, my brain "knows" they are the same and can now isolate them from their background. #1 still floors me even though I have seen it many times before, analyzed the RGB values (both 107 for R,B and G)and even gone so far as to cut and paste both squares onto a white background because I didn't believe the RGB values! Amazing!
