Red Mallee Bowl

Les Robison

>I turned this bowl yesterday to be the high light piece for a show I am participatibng in this weekend. The figure in the heartwood of the burl is almost unbelievable. Add to that the spikes and light tan color of the outer shell of the burl and you have a natural work of art done by mother nature. The piece is aboout 9 inches in diameter and only 2 inches deep. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to any of your comments.

>Here is a shot of the bottom on the Red Mallee Bowl. If you are not familiar with Red Malle, it comes from Tasmanina, Australia. The heart wood is various shades of red and it is extremly hard. I had to sharpen my bowl gouge three times to just turn this small burl, but it was well worth it. Comments welcome.

>You had to sharpen three times? Were there inclusions and bark pockets? You are right, the grain of the heartwood is very interesting.

>The reason I had to sharpen 3 times was due to the hardness of the wood. Both the front and back of the bowl are like a rock. Hollowing out the bowl portion was likely the easiest part on the tool. This one was a neat experience.!
