chain saw advice

ken chase

>I bought a 16"electric Remington at Lowes. It was 3HP 12 amps. Felt it was a bit underpowered. I returned it. What should I replace it with? I chose electric so I could cut in my shop. I don't expect to be going out and cutting trees locally as I live in the desert and there is not much variety.

Thanks

>Ken, see the note I left in the other thread you have. If you want me to drive out this coming weekend I will bring my husky 360 and you can give it a try.

There was a long thread a couple of months ago on chain saws, if you read that it wiull have lots of advice.

>Ken,

Any of those cheapee ($120 or less) brands are not going to satisfy you. First, at 12 amps it's only 1 (one) hp. Second, unless you baby it with light cutting the plastic gearings are notorious for short life.

That said, Stihl, Husky, Jansorred (sp), and a few others make "real" electric models. They will, however, cost you in the $225-250 range, but are well worth it.

Stihl you won't find online.

>Southwest Trading [link] listes the Jansored 2116E for $222 and the Husky 316 for $198 both with 16" bars and free shipping to the Lower 48.

Stihl has three models 140C, 180C and the 220. No prices on Stihl can be advertised. The 180 and 220 will both take a 16 or 18" bar.

I have a Remmington electric and mine was a dog when I bought it then I sharpened the chain. You would think that a new saw and chain would be sharp. It made all the difference in the world. It ain't fast but it cuts.

>For a coupla hundred (what a good quality electric will cost) you can get a cordless (gas) model. They are noisy, but you won't be tethered by a cord and they have more power, generally speaking.
