Tune into HGTV if you get a chance...

Joel Hunnicutt

>I was filmed back in January for a segment on HGTV's

"Crafters Coast to Coast" and the segment air's today at 12:00 noon and again at 5:00. I think it is a 10 minute segment, so I guess I have 5 minutes of fame left ;).

>Right on Charles :). They didn't give the lathe much time, but most disappointing was that my cocker spaniel didn't make it through the editing process.

Well done, my friend.

That was excellent Joel!

Ron in Drums PA

>That was a fun segment. I enjoyed watching it. You made look so easy. Looks like you had allot of fun doing the show.

Can you tell me a little about the segment rest you used to glue on the pieces?

I didn't know you were from Andy Griffith country.

Rod Peterson -- Ormond Beach

>Tres cool. I liked your clever cutoff stop on the TS (engineer's square clamped to the saw top on the opposite side of the cut off sled, if you didn't see it).

But, dude, please get some sort of eye protection for your non-lathe work. The hearing protection was good, but you can woodwork without hearing—it'll be tough without the eyes.

That was a really great segment, though. It's clear you're enthusiastic about your work. And you have some techniques that would really have been worth expanding on.

Is that lathe General green or Grizzly green? Or something else. It didn't quite look Powermatic green.

Nice job.

I saw you, too!

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Yup, same guy I met at the ACC show. Think I saw that signature piece as well.

You're a natural persona in front of the camera. Plenty of character, very enjoyable to watch. Just the kind of person that gets a regular gig.

Maybe you'll be the next Dave Hout, or David Marks!

Re: That was excellent Joel!

Joel Hunnicutt

>Hey Ron, that is a jig from texasgadgets.com . I bought it several years ago when I first started doing open segment work. I have recently made one because that jig limited me to 12 inch diameter pieces and I wanted to go a bit bigger. The jig is basically an indexing wheel and a rest to use when glueing the segments on.

>That square was the first thing handy when I made the sled, and it has never left the saw.

You are right about the glasses. I normally wear eyeglasses, but had in contacts for the shooting (you know, hollywood and all !)

The lathe is a Woodfast. It is an old Australian brand that Craft supplies used to carry.

>I liked the segment also, but I really hate it when the camera man appears drunk. Why do they think it is cool to tilt the camera left then right etc?

Also all those quick 2 second shots, glad I have Sat with hard drive in it so I could pause and slow it down, got to see a lot more.

One interesting thing was one shot, lasted about 2 seconds that was reversed, the sled was on the right and machinist square on the left. As they were taping (I assume), they had to have done it on purpose as opposed to the old film days when flipping over a splice would do the same thing.

I wish I had seen that slide table before I built the one I finished couple of weeks ago.

Where did you get the pencil type hold downs that are mounted on it? I never seen any like them.

Also is there a purpose for the slot down the length of the adjustable arm?

Re: I saw you, too!

Joel Hunnicutt

>I didn't notice that they had the sled reversed. I know what you mean about the jumpy camera angles. I guess we have MTV to thank for that.

That sled is an old Dubby and it came with those little clams. I have never seen anymore quite like them. That slot in the arm of the sled stores a stop attached to a rod. The stop is on the backside until you need it and then you jsut flip it around.

>Mine is really old and has 4 sets of divisions on it. I think it has 30,32,48, and 50. Ironicaloly I don't use any of them. I made one with 24 divisions that I use all the time now.

I remember when you first metioned this. I was out all day today and missed it.

Do you know if there is a re-broadcast date? I would love to see it. Sounds like you were a natural.

>And the sled is accurate to fractional degrees? I liked the readout on the off-blade side, too.

BTW, I'm guessing that things are just a bit less frenetic without the editing assistance. Nice work, and I'd watch a 6-part series on segmented turning on HGTV or DIY, with you as the host. I've seen Dave Hout's series a couple of times through.

Streaming video on the WC?

John Trant (Baltimore/DC area)

>I wonder if HGTV would allow streaming video of Joels segment being place on the WC. If Ellis would include the appropriate links and advertisement for HGTV, they just might go for it. I had my wife video tape it for me so I have the raw footage.

Just a thought

John

Hawaii Turner

>Aloha Joel,

Thanks for the heads up on the show, otherwise I would never have watched it. You are an extremely funny and efficient, talented turner. I learned something from you and I wished that your segment (pun) was longer.

Job well done and you did us turners proud. Step aside Norm.
