Walnut Hollowform

TomW In SouthJersey

>Here is the latest walnut hollowform. The guy I got the wood from said it is black walnut but I'm not sure.

It is 12.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches high not counting the finial. I had trouble making a finial that seemed to "fit" the shape. The collar is maple dyed with India ink and the finial is Ebony. It is sanded to 12,000 micromesh and finished with 5 coats of Formby's tung oil and Mylands High Friction Polish. The walls are between 1/8 and 3/16" thick.

This one is a little larger than the last one and more oval in shape viewed from the side.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

>Beautiful, Tom.

I could be Walnut, as some are lighter when fresh, and darken with time. I usually get a bigger contrast between heart- and sapwood in the Walnut I've used. Could it be Butternut ?

Nice use of a lovely piece of wood...

>Doubtful it is butternut. I agree it looks light for walnut. Was it kiln-dried? Whatever it is, it looks very nice.

>It looks like English Walnut to me. That would be a graft off of Black Walnut root stock. Very nice piece and I like the collar and finial.

>Tom,

I agree that it is walnut, just not sure of the black walnut. Most black walnut I have worked with is much darker even if it ws kiln dried.

In any case it is a great looking piece! Very wel done, congrats!

>Georgeous! I'd love to know your process of making and fitting the finial. Is it removable or glued in place?

Great work

>Hi Tom,

A very lovely piece. I really like the look of the finish. I may have to try the Formby's again. I used it a long time ago, but don't recall getting a finish even close to this. Is the finial removable? If I had any thing critical to say at all about this piece it would be to make the finial a tad more slender towards the top. I am terrible at finials and so take that comment as you will. When Keith Tompkins was here in Indy for a weekend demo he talked about finials and really opened my eyes about what to look for as far as going from larger to smaller and the different components of a finial. I haven't put it to work yet, but I do look more closely at them now I think. I love this piece so don't please don't take that comment the wrong way. You did a Beautiful job!

>Ken - The finial is glued with CA in place. I drill a very small hole in the lid and the finial and use a toothpick as a dowel.

Re: Beauty! - Finial Design ?

TomW In SouthJersey

>Jennifer - Thanks for the comments. This was the second finial I made for this piece. I looked at the AAW website gallery for examples of finials that I liked. Since I read the anti-copying thread I didn't copy but I used a finial by Wally Dickerman for "inspiration". My apologies to Wally. I couldn't quite get the smooth design that he did.

Maybe Keith could give a quick primer on finials on this site. I know I'm always looking for information on design.

On the main body of this piece I attempted to keep the rule of thirds in mind. The base is about one third of the width, the outside edges are about two-thirds up from the base.

Thanks again to everyone for the comments. I've only been turning for 6 months now but try to absorb all I read here that fits what I'm trying to do.

>Thanks:

I didn't realize it wasn't turned from one piece. I love the look of it and wish to do something similar. Does the lid fit into the body on a rabbit?

like a box is done?

>Yes, the lid has a recess so it fits tightly into the opening. I left a little extra space in case one wood expands more than the other.
