First turning in several months.

Gary Evans, Tallassee, TN

>Hi all,

I finally got back to the lathe this past week and weekend after a several months hiatus. This is the first time I've used the WoodFast extensively since I put the variable speed drive and AC motor on it. Somebody was foolish enough to route the conduit between the motor and the drive so that it interfered with access to the lower pulley. If I ever catch the culprit, he'll be in big trouble. 8^]

Anyway, after rerouting the conduit, which turned out to be less of a chore than I had been dreading, I rediscovered how much I love to turn.

Here is a champhor platter 15" x 1 1/2" and a camphor bowl 6 3/4" x 1 1/4". Both have Velvet Oil as a finish. Neither has cured enough yet to buff out. I used a sealer coat of shellac on the smaller piece before the oil, as it is a gift and I was afraid the smell might be too much for some folks.

I hadn't turned camphor before, and while the smell is strong, it wasn't overpowering. I really enjoyed the way it turned, and was pleased with the grain patterns in the wood. These came from a board that I bought at the auction at the Southern States symposium. See how you can benefit by supporting your regional turning shows?

Thanks for looking and comments are appreciated.

Gary

You need to move the Browse button and the Post Message button a little farther apart for us old-timers. 8^]

>Hi Gary,

Nice to know you're back at the lathe. Isn't that a nice feeling :) I love your pieces here. Nice clean lines. Camphor is yummy to turn isn't it. Bob & Sonya Lemon sent me a couple of pieces that were gorgeous!

>Thanks all,

Jennifer, I really did enjoy turning the camphor. I have heard people complain about the smell, but I didn't find it to be unpleasant at all. Plus, I was blown away by the figure, particularly in the platter. A shame that my photography skills are not better. It is a beautiful piece of wood.

Nice job on the turning! Do you have any more of that wood, perhaps a chunk that one of us (i.e., me) could acquire?

As for the photos, they are fine - I'd personally rather see more quick photos here than just a few works of photo art. The only thing I would suggest is making the images larger to show more detail. Your largest photo is still only 35K, still only about 40% of the allowed file size of 80K. You could easily make the photos, say, 500 pixels or so across.

BTW, if you use Photoshop, it has a wonderful option to size images exactly to a desired size for upload - File/Save for Web, Optimize Menu: Optimize to File Size. This takes out all the iteration and guessing!
