Danish oil ...food safe?

ckap

>Greetings all,

I have'nt been getting the best results from mineral oil on my salad bowls(both of them) so I thought I'd try danish oil.

Seemed like a good idea at the time and I like the results better,but.... after flipping the can around and reading the label I think I may have turned my salad bowl into a 12" diameter knick knack holder. Apparently there are all kinds of nasty things in danish oil.

If any of you have some insight on where danish oil lies on the old food safe scale I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks

Chris

>From what I understand most modern finishes are food safe after 30 days but it doesn't say it on the container.

>Chris, the "experts" say that all commonly available finishes are food safe after they have cured. However, you might want to consider using walnut oil as an alternative. It is safe at any time, is easy to apply and is easy to maintain. When the bowl becomes dull, as it will eventually with any finish, just mop on another coat of walnut oil. It dries like danish oil (although more slowly), so won't leave an oil mark on table cloths. Dennis

>I finally gave up on the Walnut Oil. Just would not dry. It's been on my cutting board for 2 weeks and not dry so I figured the bowl wouldn't dry either. I finally scrubbed the bowl with hot soap and water (which meant I had to hand sand it after it dried) and went to Danish. I'm sure that walnut oil will leach out of the wood though, since the hot soapy water probably only removed the surface oil.

>Even if it won't leach out you might have issues with walnut allergies [BTW there is usually a vegetable oil filler in danish oil]. So if you do use walnut oil, I would mention it on the label.
