Mahoney's Walnut oil

>Does this stuff ever dry??? It says 24 hours, but it's been over 48 and when I handle the piece, the oil is visible wherever I touch it. I wiped it as dry as I could get get it after leaving the oil on for 5 minutes. I used it because it is a utility piece and the walnut oil is food safe. :( Weather, until tonight has been dry and low humidity. Says it dries to a "hard" satin finish. Ha!

>Hi Carole,

I haven't used the Mahoney Walnut Oil, but I wonder if your bottle was well-mixed. He must add some driers to it because pure walnut oil doesn't dry very fast, as you have found out. If your bottle sat on the shelf for awhile, all the driers might be on the bottom.

Just a thought,

Gary

>Hi carole, here in Arizona, the walnut oil is dry to the touch in less than two hours.I still wait a couple of weeks to put a finish over it. How humid is your area? sean

>It does dry and I find Mahoney's better than cold pressed and refined walnut oil. It says it's heat treated so I don't think driers are used. It varies on weather and the wood you're using and its oil content. I've used Mahoneys on olive wood and it dries relatively quick. I have used it on punky engligh apple and what looked dry had started to sweat the stuff a day later.

If you want a vegetable oil with driers its called danish oil. =o)

>Carole, here in Baltimore, Mahoney's takes forever to dry. (weeks or more). I only use it on finishes that I'm not going to buff, so I apply it, wipe it dry, and then a couple of days later finish it off with beeswax.
