Need help with Sorby Hollower

ruth in So. Cal

>I recently bought the bent head Sorby hollower. It has a cutter that is triangular in shape...and, I don't know how to use it. I checked on Woodcraft's web site but they don't even show the cutter head. When I tried it for the first time yesterday I was using it as it came, with the point facing forward.....this didn't seem to work at all, ongoing catches and very unstable on the tool rest even with hand support.

Can anyone offer any tips?

thanks,

Ruth

>Ruth,

I am guessing it came with the Sorby tear drop shaped cutter. This "bit" is designed so you can use any part of it you want depending on what part of the piece you are working on. Loosen the screw and you can turn it to different positions and use different parts of the scrapper. Yhe flat section you are trying to use is normally used on the bottom of a piece to flatten it out.

The Sorby tear drop is probably one of the most popular shaped scrapers due to its universal shape allowing it to be used most anywhere.

>Hi Ruth,

I have the same tool and use it frequently to finish up the inside and outside of bowls and vessels. The flat portion of the teardrop cutter is what I use on the outside of the piece. I like to use this in a shear scraping position. I hold the cutter at about 45deg. to the surface. The curved part of the cutter is used on the inside of the bowl or vessel. I like to keep the point at a position so that I know it will not touch the bottom or any point of the piece. It would make for a nasty catch if it did. I take very light cuts with this cutter and mainly use it for cleaning up the inside walls after I use a hollowing cutter. Hope this helps, maybe someone else will chime in too.

Good luck.

Jennifer

>is this the only "bit" you have for it?? mine came with the little cutter, better for hollowing, also, this tool requires you to pull back the toolrest a bit, so the curve is all the way in FRONT of the rest. the cutter and the point where you rest the tool shoud be inline, even if you get a catch it won't know the tool around that much

>Thanks everyone! Jennifer, based on your info I immediately see the problem. I bought this at the woodshow a few weeks ago and thought I was buying a hollower!

I have ordered the catalogue, thanks for the link.

>Ruth,

Sorby also has some excellent Video CD's available for FREE. I have all three, though the first is the best. These are: "Speialist Woodturning Tools, Part 1", "Specialist Woodturning Tools, Part 2" and "Starting Woodturning".

All are basically ads for the tools, but I think it is the first one that will show you the hollower (and the multi-tip tool) in action.

The disks are meant to be played on your computer, but might play on some newer DVD players as well.

-Craig

P.S. Smaller versions of portions of the disk are available from the Woodcraft site, but the resolution is crap so contact Sorby and get the disks.

>How do you receive the videos for free?

The website catalog request form shows no direct way to request these...other than an "additional information required" textbox.

Following the links for the Product Line shows a page with 3 seperate videos but no way to request them.

Short of a long distance call across the world, what are my options?

Dan.

>I also find this tool difficult to control. From what I'm reading here it's not clear to me, is it for finishing or hollowing?

I went to the the link and it appears today to be made with a flat bottom that sits on the tool rest. This would make it easier to control. Why wasn't it built that way in the beginning? I just bought mine last December and it is round.

I used one that is square and the cutter is 45 degrees and that makes the most sense even though it did not have the swan neck.
