Chuck bought on Ebay.

Barry Irby

>I posted a message here about a chuck I bought on Ebay and was dissatisfied with. I wanted to make a new post to be sure I was fair and reported the following.

When I came in today, I noticed a parcel post box sitting on my front porch. It was the replacement chuck. The seller has sent me a replacement chuck, complete with new jaws and a key. The key and jaws appear perfect this time and the chuck is a bit stiff, but seems it will run in and is smooth. I am completely satisfied.

I do wish he had sent an e-mail to tell me it was on the way. Also, he was foolish to send this one without making me return the defective one, but I will ship it Monday.

Thanks to everyone here for the help and support.

There is a thread down below (Bad Experience; now stagnant) that got quite heated over issues of how vendors should act regarding customer service. Your vendor did what the majority of the respondents thought was the right thing for a vendor to dothat is make good on the product virtually without question.

Frankly, although there are some less than reputable people out there who might have kept the second chuck, for most in that thread, and I think most that all of us know, the machine has yet to be invented that could measure the slimness of the chance that we wouldn't send the defective one back.

It's just as much the right thing to do as all the customer service that folks in the other thread expect from their vendors.

>I posted the message above in a bit of a hurry. I wanted to report that it worked out and that the vendor has made it good. Thank you to him. I had blasted him and Ebay and Paypal pretty thoroughly, so I wanted to set the record straight.

I also want to say that I was inexperienced with Ebay, Paypal, and on-line vendors and should have done more research. This is sort of like your mother telling you "Be Careful" when you have no concept of what carefully meant or dangerous is. I did not know of the "dangers" or how to do research or even what to research. Maybe I really should get the book "Ebay for Dummies". OTOH, if I am going to have to hours of research it might have been cheaper to buy the chuck from Woodcraft. My time is worth something.

If I am going to join this on-line world and not get left standing in the Woodcraft store, maybe I (we) need to come up to speed on the process. For example, perhaps I should have printed out the Ebay site and the Paypal receipt at the very least.

Someone raised the issue of whether it was foolish as I suggested for him to send a new chuck without demanding the return of the existing one. I have had several conversations with merchants on Ebay who say people NEVER get around to returning stuff unless they are charged for it and then demand a refund. They also order things like clothes and when they find they don't fit they report them as defective or "not as advertised" forcing the merchant to pay shipping both ways and developing a bad profile on the merchant. I suppose the lesson there is the customers have a responsibility to be good citizens also. This was the reason I wanted to give this merchant a chance to set this right before I figured out how to complain to Ebay and Paypal.

I have heard that one of the TV shopping networks has a return rate in excess of thirty percent. Restocking is their single largest expense.

I do Home Inspections to support my wood working habit. I learned early on people are not reliable about paying. We would mail them the report and the bill. Of the first $6000 worth, they only paid half. Spent an enormous amount of time doing collections. We now collect on site at the time of the inspection. Almost never get a bad check (they are buying a house, not a good time to be bouncing checks). Guess who the worst payers are? Banks. If you treated banks as badly as they treat me, you wouldn't have enough credit to buy lunch. The point is that I have some sympathy for the merchant and wish to treat him fairly.

>"eBay for Dummies" is a great book, and it will help you avoid problems. I read it cover to cover before I did anything on eBay, and it makes life a lot easier.

>Glad to hear it all worked out for you. I had the same thing myself. Originally wanted a refund but decided to get a replacement chuck. Came quickly and I am sending the bad one back soon as I can. The seller seems to be an upstanding guy and wants happy customers. I will leave him good feedback.

Wish I could say that for another seller recently.Grossly misrepresented items, overcharged shipping, couldn't work out a return. They will get very negative feedback. That's a first for me.
