Powermatic 24" lathe

>While I was visiting Indiana, I had the opportunity to turn on Duane Leach's 24" Powermatic lathe.

This is a machine you don't hear too much about, the first time I have had the opportunity to check one out. This lathe is massive, when I returned home, my General looked delicate in comparison. The bed of the Powermatic is nearly double the thickness my lathe. The 3 HP motor drives the lathe via a multi-rib belt similar to an automotive serpentine belt. The lathe is equipped with a digital rpm counter, the heaviest cut produced a drop of only 6(!) rpm. This machine is a serious alternative the the Oneway 2436, at a serious savings!

The photo is Duane with his lathe....I'll post a photo of his work soon....

>It's really quite an impressive lathe. Duane told me about it during the 2004 symposium banquet.

It's too bad that Powermatic couldn't engineer the lathe to have the movable headstock like the 3520. If so I would have seriously considered it. The moveable headstock feature is invaluable to me.

>Thanks Keith. The powermatic 4224 has been a big work horse for me and works equally well on small stuff to. I have had it for two years now and have no complaints about it. The old Record lathe I had before would go on a walk about every time I turned something out of balence. But this lathe weighs in at 1000 pounds and is rock solid. The 3 HP motor will handle any cut I can make on it. I can't imagine being happer with any other lathe.

While Keith was here he fell in love with one of my pieces, so I sent it home with him. I find it very heart warming to know my work is going to someone who realy appreciates the beauty of the piece. Enjoy it Keith I know it's in a good home.

Happy turning.

>I love mine also. Like you, I see other lathes as being "light weight designs" since purchasing mine. Shipping weight was 1000 lbs, and there was a small skid and some cardboard box to subtract from that total. It's a lot of cast iron. I wish someone with bona fides and no prejudices would do a side by side comparison of it and the "cadillac" which everyone fawns over. I think most turners would be amazed at the results. I would have had to spend an additional $2300 to get the "other" brand with the same h.p. motor. I spent that money on chucks, gouges, vacuum pumps, and a Jet mini lathe. Can you tell I'm a happy turner?

>I took a class at Provo Utah a couple of years age and turned on the Oneway and the Powermatic 4224 lathes. After a week I hated the Oneway and wanted a 4224. I found one in Iowa in a store owned by the publisher of Woodsmith magazine. It was the same yellow but the fit didn't seem right. I couldn't put my finger on it but it didn't look the same. You can't always believe what a salesman says but he told me the lathe was now being made in China and some changes had been made. Don't know, but the one in Utah was a hell of a lathe. Ron

>I have a 4224 also and it has been great. Coming in at a 1000lbs vibration is just not an issue no matter how heavy the blank or how off balance.

I bought it from Osolnik machinery a year ago and at the time I had no idea I was buying a lathe from a legend.

As for the moveable headstock it would be nice, but instead I just grab a saddle from the barn and throw it on the bed and I'm good to go :)
