Finish for Cocobolo

Paul Porter in Phoenix, AZ

>I have a cocobolo hollow form I need to refinish. The first finish was Danish oil and buffing. Now it looks horrible. What works best with cocobolo poly or tung oil or...? Will I need to wipe it down with acetone before I apply the finish? If there is a previous thread or article on this subject, please let me know.

TIA

>Not shure on a bowl finish hut maybe. Never did have much luck in wiping down then applying finish. I make duck calls out of cocobolo and the finish that I use on them is one or two coats shellac and one coat of fast dry poly. Gives a good hard durable finish. Without shellac the poly will never dry as other finishes would be the same I am shure. Finishing forum may give other methods of finish.

>Paul, I just finished a cocobolo bowl. sanded to 600 and used two coats of walnut oil. In 2-3 weeks I'll buff on the Beeal system. I would give it a good acetone wash first.Or you can wait and see how mine comes out. See you next sat. Sean

>Don't put anything on it. Sand it down to whatever pleases you (I like to go to 600) then buff with tripoli then wax wheel but don't add wax to the wheel. Whatever is on the wheel will be enough. I've found cocobolo likes to be naked, basically.
