Turning and CA Glue, A tool?

Jim Shaver Oakville, Ont.

>Hi,

I was at my woodturning club tonight for one of of our meetings. It was funny, but in about 4 conversations I had tonight I listened while the other person spoke about some aspect of turning and how they used CA glue for this and that. I started to think to myself that this was indeed a curious thing.

I have also been watching more turning video's lately and many times the demonstrator will use CA to solve a problem or rescue a piece on the lathe....where would we be without CA glue??

:-)

Anyway, I know that I use it extensively in my pen turning, from gluing tubes to saving chip outs to the final finish.

I guess I was curious, how important is CA glue to you in your turning work?? Would you consider it an essential turning "tool" in your work??

Thanks,

Take care,

Jim

>Hi Jim,

I would consider it a pretty important tool in my arsenal. Not something I use on every piece...but boy when I need it I'm glad it's there! It's definitely saved me more than a few times. I've also found that my local Hobby Store is a better place to buy it. Much cheaper than Rockler or Woodcraft and a better choice of viscosities and even colors.

>It's called Hobby Town USA here in Indy. I think it's a chain? It's mostly modeling and those expensive RC race cars and boats....lots of train stuff too. I haven't checked for a website. The CA glue I buy there is their own brand. Comes in about 5 different viscosities and even black, brown, and flexible too!

>CA glue probably ranks #1 in taking woodturning from the stone age to the space age, the next best thing since the bowl gouge.

Great for seamless repairs, total fixes, patches, stabalizing, etc. etc. in a timely fashion. I'm glad it's around

>It certainly is not an essential turning tool but it sure feeds out need for instant gratification. Don't get me wrong, I use it all of the time for everything that it has been demonstrated to be useful (except as a finish). No matter how great I think it is or how often I use it, I cannot help but think that its use has etched away at out skills. Don't worry about a proper joint, CA it. Don't worry about proper wood selection, fill the voids or repair the cracks with CA. Don't worry about proper technique (drying, turning, etc), CA will repair it. Don't worry with traditional finishes, smear CA on it. Don't worry if CA fails after a decade or so and our finials fall off or our bowls crack again or our ornamentation/fills falls out, CA it back on.

Of course this discussion reminds me that I need to buy another couple of 16 oz bottles of both thin and medium forms of CA. I go through the stuff like crazy!

>I haven't bought CA from the source Ron mentions, but our turning club here in VT has ordered directly from E-Z Bond, and I think they really do have the best deal going. It is interesting to note that the last time we placed an order, we found it was cheaper to get 8 - 2oz. bottles than to get one 16oz. and all the bottles and tops needed to divide it into small aliquots for storage. they also offer extra caps, and multiples of the tiny capillary tubes for delicate repairs. We didn't notice any shipping delay -- took order pledges one month, and divided up the glue at the next meeting. We've also been lucky that the owner of the business that hosts our meetings (Woodbury's of Vermont) has kindly allowed us to add to his occasional orders, too.

>We sell E-Z bond at our club as well. Goes really well, you can sell it at half the price of most stores, and still make a good profit for the club.

I personnally keep a 16oz bottle of thin, medium, thick and super thick around, as well as the accellorator and debonder. I use it for all sorts of junk around the shop and home.

>From what I have read it doesn't self destruct in ten years as I had been told. Appears to last as long as any other glue.
