My Eyes Are Bigger than my Lathe

Charlie Anderson in Southern Maryland

>Some of you may remember a picture I posted a month or so ago of a downed cherry tree with lots of burls. I was told it was to be firewood. Luckily, the owner relented and allowed me to take some wood. He extracted a price of 2 bowls from me. One for his wife and one for his mother. I'll probably make a couple of pens from some of the burl for the men.

My Jet 1236 probably won't do justice to this wood, but it's all I have.

>I have a 1236 also, haven't tried any thing that large on it yet, but have some ideas for when I do...I have a floor mounted tool rest, old and very heavy, if piece has to turned outboard. I.ll have several bags of sand on a shelf under the lathe.I'll do the gross trimming with bandsaw and chainsaw. Mount the piece, turn by hand- you'll see more chunks that could be removed off the lathe. Mount between centers, if poss, take off. remount. on the last mount for roughing, CAREFULLY do final trimming with a small electric chainsaw. Use faceshield, slow speed, big. long handled sharp gouge, stepping out of line of fire, if possible. I'd keep turning off the lathe, adjusting toolrest close, retightening tailstock.

>Find a friend with a larger lathe. Those are some hefty chuncks for a 1236, I had one before going to a PM3520. It will be much better to trade some wood for some time on a larger machine so you can rough the pieces so they won't tear the 1236 apart. If you can't find anyone with a bigger machine you should definantly get them as round and balanced as possible before mounting them on a 1236 and then put lots o weight on it to keep it from dancing to its own tune. I would also suggest altering your drive to make it slower when you start it up with big honking pieces on it like those. Pull the speed handle off and adjust the knotched knob so that you have one more click lower, or just wire it in a lower position for the duration of the first stage of roughing. I did that for some of bigger blanks when I was using my 1236. MP Wall

>Hmmm! The local farmer's market has a woodturner with a booth and he has a Jet 1642 in it. There's another woodturner who I have not met who has a Poolewood. He's over in the next county.

What ever I do, I'll get it almost round with my bandsaw before mounting it on the lathe.

I also have a large burl that I doubt I can put on the 1236. I hate to do it but I'm thinking of donating it to the turning club for the auction.

>Hey, (hint..hint) ... there's a guy just a bit north of you who has given you a whole set of turning tools, lessons, and a trailer full of turning wood.... I hear he loves working with large cherry burls.

>Hey Charlie, just wondering which side of the Bay in MD you are on when you say Southern MD? I go to Salisbury fairly often.

>Charlie,

It's a very generous gesture for you to offer up a big burl, BUT, I don't think its a crime to cut that burl into smaller chunks and make some finely-made, albeit smaller turnings. You can always make one big thing, and a few smaller pieces, (or donate the little guys), or even quarter it, and make a series of pieces all similar, but having individual character.

>Carole - for shame! Southern Maryland only occurs on the Western shore. The folks on the other side would be as offended to be labeled Southern Md. as the folks on the Western shore would be to have them included.

I have a 1236 and some big wood also. The wood is all waxed up and waiting for me to finally get a bigger lathe.

How big are those smaller crotches?

I can't understand the dialect of the Eastern Shore natives.

>Can you rough it out to about 13"? I've turned 13" on my Jet 1236 and finished up with a 11.5" bowl. If you are interested in how to do it let me know.

How does that compare to the Eastern Shore accent/dialect?

>Sounds like you need a bigger lathe. Maybe someone around 15 minutes away that doesn't have a lathe yet could come by with a pickup and get the old clunker out of your way.
