Vacuum turning diagram

Dave Peebles Lyons, Ohio!

>Earlier tonight on the chat we discussed vacuum chucking.

I said I would post a pic of the diagram I used for my set up.

This is right off the Oneway site and I used it with few changes. All the pipe fittings are easily found at your local big box store. As is the re-inforced rubber tubing for the connection to the rotary adapter.

>These are some of my first homemade chucks. They are made from a small face plate. a piece of MDF with a groove cut in to it to accept the PVC connector. and a rubber o-ring for the seal.

I have since gone to aluminum drum chucks. But these worked very well for the couple of years that I used them.

Oneway chucks

Dave Peebles Lyons, Ohio!

>Hi Stuart,

No, Not really. I guess the biggest thing is the ability to change the inserts for different lathes. They use the same inserts as the Stronghold chuck. Also, after a bit of time the o-rings began to get brittle on my home made chucks.

I have recently made up a small 2" chuck for tiny turnings. It is a little different from the first ones. I used the foamies for the face. It works much better and leaves no black marks on the work.

Best wishes,

Dave

>Dave,

You might like to improve your system by replacing the ball valve with a true vacuum relief valve. The will allow very fine adjustment of vacuum pressure. I got mine from WW Grainger. They come in various sizes I would use there part number 5Z763 for NPT thread or 5Z764 for 3/8 NTP thread. They run $8.72 and $14.22 list price respectively.

>My setup is very similar to yours, Dave. I used to have chucks setup like yours, but about 6 monthes ago, I replaced the faceplates with waste blocks with dovetails for you 4 jaw chuck. That way, I can use it one any lathe. This was suggested by Dave Hout at a seminar.

>Would not miss it. I will be demoing at Craft Supply Super Wednesday. I am sure I will see you there if not at Mike's. Will be with Mark Baker from the UK. Mark is going to demo at Super Wednesday and the Symposium.

>Thanks Greg,

I'll look into it. The one I have now seems to allow some very fine adjustments. But I am always looking for something better.

Best wishes,

Dave
