Bent McNaughton Blades

>I finally got to use my McNaughton system and during the first bowl the medium blade bent and twisted. This was the first bowl so i was inserting the tool very slowly and the lathe was spinning about 350 rpm when the blade twisted in the gate and the blank wedged on the blade. When i pulled the blade out of the blank ii is bent and twisted.

Are the blades really this fragile?

How does everyone keep the blades from bending?

How do you submit a warranty request?

Any suggestions and or comments are appreciated.

Thank You,

Dave

>You did not mention the size of the bowl but 350rpm is very slow. The chips will build up and grab the knife if you do not clear them, causing the blank to bind on the blade and possibly bend or pull the blank off the tenon. More speed makes the knife cut smoother and the chips eject easier. On the size bowl I would be using the standard set, medium blade to core I would be 700-800 rpm. When I first started I loosened the drive belt so when there was a jam the belt slipped. Are you frequently backing the knife out to clear the chips?

Did you make a second cut at the beginning to allow the chips to escape?

Have you watched Mike Mahoneys DVD? If not I would recommend you do so.

Good luck, there is a learning curve.

>I agree turn up the speed. I too had a problem with twisting until I learned to go slow and a lot of in and out for chip removal.

Straighten them and try again.

This tool does have a gigantic learning curve but it is worth it. I don't think any other has the adaptability to as many core shapes and sizes. Be patient.

Good turning and be safe
