>That is my "turning blank preparation platform." 8^]

I cut a V notch in one end of a log. I then make a parallel cut about three inches away from the top and about 3" or 4" deep. The following cut just opens it up enough to get a clamp in there.

You can use one of these for a long time. I think this one is sycamore and is at least a year and a half to two years old.

The top of this one is quite chewed up. You may be able to see that the clamp pocket is only about 2" from the top. It still is effective. I used it to prepare 30 or 40 pieces for the Southern States symposium.

Another picture follows.

>I don't recommend the use of fast clamps. They tend to vibrate loose. I usually use a long jawed pipe clamp. It evidently didn't want to come out to play this morning.

You can't see it, but there is another piece about 18" high under the log in the picture. This puts it up at a height that is easy to use. 18" of shavings and cutoffs testify to how much use this platform has seen.

Let me know if you have questions.

>Hi Gary,

This certainly meets my criteria! Simple, cheap, recyclable, and undoubtedly effective. I like it -- it's perfect. I've just got to get some longer jaws for my pipe clamp. Thanks for the pix and idea.

Happy and safe log trimming,

Gary
