This is a little plate that I made for a co-worker who is having a baby in June. Her and her husband found out that they are having a little girl and they are naming her Evelyn Faye. Her little room is painted sage green and mauve and has purple flowers all over it. I would like to make a stand before I give it to her on Saturday. I attempted one today but it ended up in the trash. I'll start over tomorrow.
The plate is about 7" diameter, made of cherry, bleached rim, burned and then colored with Prisma markers. Sprayed with Krylon Fixatif, then 4 coats of Rockler Wipe on Poly finish. A final coat of Lee Valley conservators wax was put on today. I think I might buff it a bit with the Beal wax wheel. Comments welcome. My pics are not the best. I was having a hard time getting both rims in focus. Practice I guess.
That's really great! I love what you are doing with the markers. When you say "bleached", do you mean literally just a "clorox" type bleach or something? How do you keep it where you want it on the wood?
>I really enjoy seeing your work, I like the woodburning and turning combination, and I like the color you add...do you draw the flowers onto the wood freehand? or a template?..I am trying to get a nice platter shape, and then intend to following your lead, you are an inspiration in this art...thanks..Dennis
Thank you so much for your kind comments. I do draw the flowers or as in a previous piece the Dancing Kids. I use pencil, that way I can erase with an artgum eraser after I burn. My drawing abilities are quite limited so I try to keep it real simple.
Thank you :)....I use a two part Bleach that you can get at the borgs, or in my case Sherwin Williams. You mix the two parts 50/50 and I apply with a small artist paint brush. In order to keep the bleach where I want it I need to use either a groove, or some other defining point in the piece like a bead or a cove. If you do get the bleach somplace where you don't want it you can neutralize it with vinegar. I apply about 4 times to get to the desired whitness. Drying the bleach in the sun makes it go a bit quicker and I feel like it gets whiter too. Then I finish it just like the rest of the piece.
Thanks again for your very nice comments. It will be fun to give this to Mom & Dad to be, this weekend.
