Viva and Brawny, step aside!

Cause neither of these brands of paper towels have a quarter of the absorbency of a piece of punky spalted Beech! :>)

While I haven't gotten around to trying out the thinned varnish solution on that punky spalted maple piece, I did decide to use in on some spalted beech.

I swear I made up a quart of thinned varnish (50% mineral spirits and 50% McCluskey's Spar varnish) and this 10" bowl drank up about 1/2 to 2/3 of it!

And to top it off, after 15 minutes, it was almost dry to the touch. That was some thirsty wood.

Anybody else ever have that happen?

See ya around,

Dominic

>Yes, I have on several occasions tried to save some over spalted Mango wood, and WOW, did it drink up a lot of my 50/50 lacquer sanding sealer/thinner mix. Some times, you can't visualize where it goes.

>I have a huge antique Sycamore log round butcher block about 30+ inches in diameter. A few winters ago it was checking from the winter heat. Over the course of the winter I put a couple pints of olive oil on it. Checks closed nicely and no sign of all the oil.

>Hi Dom

Have a chunk of spalted beech burl soaking in a shellac/alcahol/red rit dye mix myself. Very punky! Two days and still have bubbles coming out of it. Not sure if I put enough shellac in but might let it dry and give it a second bath. Should be ineresting.

Spence

>I have tryed this same thing many times. But on some of the pieces the smell of the mineral spirets won't go away. In my futher turnings of punky wood I will try useing water and glue 50/50 mixture. It may take awhile to dry out but the smell won't run me out of the shop.

Happy turning

Duane
