Mesquite Bowl

>I got a nice Mesquite blank from Dave Smith. It arrived 2 days after ordering all the way across country from Washington to NJ.

This is the first I've turned mesquite. I like the way it turns and finishes.

Sanded to 12,000 micromesh then finished with Mylands Friction Polish. Its just over 6 inched wide, 2 1/2 high and 3/8" thick.

My son looked at the inside pattern and said "End of the World" bowl. It does look like a mushroom cloud.

Comments and critique welcomed,

Tom

>Tom Nice job. I like the grooves on the top of the rim. As I live in AZ. I turn lots of it and I believe it is my favorite to work with.

Good turning and be safe.

>Hi Tom,

That's very nice! I really like the rim treatment, very neat. I keep seeing all these great mesquite pieces and I keep telling myself I have to try some.

How was it to turn? I envision it as hard as a rock, very brittle?

I agree with your son, looks like Nuke cloud to me!

Mike

On the lookout for mesquite in Apex, NC...

Thanks for the comments. It was the first time I've turned mesquite. It was a real treat. It turned very easily and stayed smooth. I had less sanding than on almost any piece I've done. It almost spoiled me to think I'm so good with the tools now that sanding is secondary. I found myself back to reality tonight on some cherry.

If you can get some mesquite definitely try it.

I don't know if Dave Smith has any more but you can ask. Plus the piece I got was pre-alcohol dried and ready to turn. Don't tell him I told you but he has more wood available than he lists on his website for sale. Just appeal to his generosity and maybe he'll break into his secret stash.
