Made a Steady Rest

Dick Parr

>Well our youngest daughter has the wife out for the day and so I played in the shop. Darn, all by myself in the shop all day.

Well I got the wheels for this project on Friday from Gary Evans and decided it was time to Get 'R' Done. I got the idea/design from Dominic Greco here on the WC and as slow as I am and with a lot of rest periods, it took all day.

But it is done and I am happy with it, it works. This should allow me to make a few things I have been holding off on until I got one of these rests.

It is made from scrap 3/4" oak ply that was sitting around, a few knobs and 1/4-20 from Lee Valley and I finished it with Deft semi gloss spray.

Thanks for looking

Dick

Good job. Just a question. Why did you put the metal on the top roller guide and not on the bottom 2. I made wooden slots in all 3 positions on mine. I'm wondering if I missed something that might make it better. John

>John the bottom two are riding on the outside plywood brace so none was needed. While at Arrowmont last month for a Ray Key demo with our turning club, I noticed that the steady rests hanging on the wall all had metal on either side of the roller guides. Since I didn't want to build up anymore wood to hamper access over the top, I just used some metal that I had on hand.

I figured if it was OK for Arrowmont to use, then I would give it a try. It does keep the top roller guide from moving around.

>Ya Gary,

I was able to get 3 good ones and just chucked them up on the pen mandrel and used some sandpaper to smooth all the high spots off and get all the gravel out. Looks like they will work great.

>Dick,

Wow, that was quick! What a craftsman.

BTW, I certainly enjoyed hanging out and seeing your shop the other day with Gary. (VERY nice shop!) I've got big plans for some of the wood and material you gave me. (Hey, did you ever try laminating corian and wood then turning?)

>Oh, and I forgot to mention - if you ever need steel for some jig or project don't go buy any - I've got about 8000 lbs in the shed behind my chicken house, along with welder, etc. I don't have much angle iron, but I have a lot of flat, bar, and round stock in a variety of sizes. Most of it is hot rolled, but some cold rolled.
