order took longer than expected

Bob Elliott

>Let's talk about shipping time. I ordered a face plate from them via the internet (they use Yahoo Shopping) on 4-24-05 and rec'd it on May 6, 2005. That's 12 days. I believe the original estimate was 5-7 days.

I could be wrong but I don't think they are a real big organiztion. The weekend of April 29, 30 & May 1 was Southern States Symposium and they were there. I guess when you are tied up at a symposium for a minumum of 3 days, it's hard to ship product!

correction

Bob Elliott

>I just re-read my (4-24-05) original order and it states: "All orders normally ship within 2-3 business days."

The invoice date / time from Best Wood Tools: 5-3-05 @ 12:00:34 pm.

It took Best Wood Tools 9 days to write the order and pack it for shipping. The order took 3 days to get from Tennessee to Florida.

When they came to our woodturning club meeting a year or two ago I got the impression it was a small operation, run basically by the guy and his wife. (Just my impression based on progressively failing memory.) Very likeable people, BTW.

>The guy and his wife you saw at the symposium, are the company (he might have a guy to help him in the machine shop).

Knowing that, and the fact they try to hit as many of the symposia as possible, I take that into account. There work is worth the wait.

Just my opinion.

>I think that Mark is correct.

I purchased a curved tool rest at the SS Symposium and he said that it would have to be shipped. Some of the items that he did not have in stock with him would have to be made, so it might take a few days to machined and get ready to ship.

>John is right. Vic and Sharon are the owners, operators, shipper, etc. I know they have trouble meeting shipping orders some times because they are on the road at different symposiums. When that happens they get behind. Last time I was there they had a very large supply of parts so I'm just guessing that they don't build the pieces as you order them they are already in stock. It's apparently just a matter of being home long enough to get everything shipped out. I know Vic was complaining one time about symposiums running really close together made it hard for them get things out.

>For Christmas my wife got me their carving stand. She didn't notice the drop-down list and got the default 1x8 spindle size. They replaced it with the correct 1 1/4x8 with no problem. Both the original and the replacement arrived promptly.

>for your support of woodturning by attending many symposia.

It would be nice if more makers would show their wares at smaller or regional events. Most of us are willing and able to wait a few extra days for a quality product that we may have eyeballed or talked about with the maker. More so when the tools are fairly priced, ethically promoted and sold with reliable backup.

>The 3" x 33 mm face plate I rec'd is beautiful. Even Oneway does not make a 3" plate for the 33 mm spindle. The only fault I see with the Best Wood design is that the location of the set screw it too close to the headstock. In other words, the set screw does not align with the set screw groove that Oneway machines into their spindles. Thus, I won't be using the set screw or turning in reverse with this face plate.

>David,

I have been with Victor and Sharon at several of the regional symposiums that I have attended. They are two of the nicest folks you would want to meet.

If there was a problem with your order, I'm sure it wasn't due to a lack of concern on their part.

It wouldn't hurt to give the details when you frame a question with an implicit criticism of a company. That way we know your side of the story.

They're no Amazon.com

Mike Schwing from Md.

>But I like them anyway. Product is good, folks are nice and friendly. They are not necessarily the most responsive, I will grant that. I have done a lot of business with them. They've made shipping errors, but have sent the proper product along pronto when discovered, without waiting for the other product to be returned first. They've let me change orders in mid-stream. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm still waiting for them to ship me something we talked about months ago, but I'm not worried (obviously) because I know they're good for it and I'm in no hurry for it.

If I could suggest one single thing that would improve their business, it would be to make a promise to return every phone call or respond to every email within 24 hours. Regardless of their show schedule or other engagements, they're a competitive business like any other, and compete for customers. Prompt service encourages repeat buyers, delayed response does not.

Still, I continue to buy from them, and because the product is very good and the people are very friendly, I am willing to make allowances for non amazon.com like response time.

open mouth, insert foot

Bob Elliott

>In my previous post, I made a completely false statement. This morning I went out to my lathe, removed the set screw from the Best Wood face plate, and screwed the plate on to the spindle. Lo and behold, the set screw hole does line up with the groove in the spindle! I'm a happy guy and I'm sorry for any confusion I may have brought about.

Thus, I will be using the set screw and I will be turning in reverse with this face plate with confidence!

Also, I will continue to buy Best Wood products with confidence that they will perform as designed / manufactured.

>I ordered some things from them around noon on Friday 5/6. I was told they should be able to get them out the first of next week. I just heard a thud on my front porch and when I looked it was my order via Priority Mail. Even being told next week they still shipped it out the same day.

Couldn't want any better service than that.

very surprised that you all accept poor service

David E Whiting

>They said it usually ships in 2-3 days. I guess the operative word is usually. I have left email and voice mails. Very simple, When I am paying top dollar, I expect top service.

Just my 2 cents
