Silver Solder Question#1

Spence in Rhode Island

>I have only been able to find two types of silver solder locally but I'm unsure if either one will do the job of attaching HSS tool bits to Cold rolled steel shafts. The first solder say it contains 96% tin and 4% silver. The other contains Tin, Copper, Bismuth and Silver but not with a percentage of the metals. Will either of these work and if so which would be the best?

Thanks

Spence

>Spence,

Either will work. the second one is a harder solder and will take more heat to use properly. If you are using propane go with the first solder, Mapp gass and above will wok withthe second.

A thought, if using Mapp or hotter, Sears sells a thin brazing rod which would be better than the solder.

>Thanks Jim. They both say the have roughly the same melting point of around 430 degrees so we'll see what happens. As I said above I'll post my success or failure when I get it done.
