Homemade Handle question

Doug Bartos, Md

>I just purchased a Woodcut Proforme (small gloat) hollowing tool and I have made a handle for it. My question is how deep to drill the hole. The ground part of the tool that is designed to accept set screws in the regular Woodcut handle is about 1.5 inches. The ferrule on my handle is about 3/4 of an inch and the overall length of the handle is about 22 inches.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Doug

I typically bury 2-3" in the handle to avoid split

>Doug,

Since the Pro-form shafts are too short to be putting lots into the handle, I'd suggest, if possible, that you bore out the handle to accept a 1-1/2"x5/8"to3/4" steel bushing which you can glue into the handle. Then drill and tap a 3/16" set screw through both your ferrule and the bushing to lock the shaft in the handle. If your handle size will allow that, take your pro-form shaft with you when you get the bushing to make sure it will insert into the bushing you get.

Good Luck

>Thanks Steve and Mark,

My primary concern was not wanting to bury too much in the handle since it is rather short. My ferrule is 1 inch so I have room to go the bushing route. If I can find a bushing around here, I'll give it a shot.

Thanks again,

Doug
