Super Nova Chuck bought on EBAY, Help

Barry Irby

>I bought a Supernova chuck on Ebay. I am a novice at Ebay. The chuck was $89.99 plus shipping for a total of $100. It arrived and the keeper ring in the key is clearly crooked and the head on the key is lopsided. The chuck is very stiff compared to my original and the jaws do not fully close or align properly. There is a gap across the chuck between 2&3 and 1&4 that tapers and there is some mechanical misaligning or slight steps between the jaws.

Will the chuck loosen with use? Is this typical? How Important is the alignment of the jaws? Can I fix the key myself?

Is this a Nova problem or an EBAY problem? I have E-mailed the seller. I had assumed I was buying a first quality chuck and this one appears it may be a second or a reject. Where do Ebay sellers get their stuff? What is Nova's policy on seconds?

I am not posting the seller's name because they may step up. I just sent the e-mail and they have not had a chance to respond. TIA

>Barry,

I just looked at the Ebay add and the seller listed it as a "brand new" item. Did it come with the box and instructions?

I would think the seller should stand behind this sell and make it right, but if he soes nt have a replacement you are out a chuck at a great price. I would be tempted to contact Nova and see if they will replace or repair the chuck under warrantee.

>Barry,

The seller is responsible for the condition of the goods they sell and the accuracy of their description, regardless of the manufacturer. I have a Supernava that has none of the problems you describe, so this is not the usual state for this chuck. I'd want the seller to fix or replace the chuck, or return my money.

>Barry,

In general, I've had pretty good luck with eBay purchases, with only a couple of conflicts with the seller.

For the most part, eBay is a buyer beware situation. The sellers are usually pretty good about disclosing any problems with the item in the auction description. The buyers are expected to ask the sellers about any problems or defects before placing their bid. The seller is expected to give honest responses to any questions, and if they do not, then the buyer has grounds to protest the sale. The buyer can also view any questions and answers that any other bidders may have asked, before placing any bids.

If the seller didn't misrepresent the item in any way, and if you didn't ask the right questions before bidding, then it is buyer beware. Your avenue now is to negotiate with the seller and see if you can resolve the issue with maybe a partial refund or maybe the seller will take it back.

I've had only two issues on my purchases. On one, the item (an ottoman) was the wrong color. I contacted the seller and I was offered a 50% refund, or return and complete refund. On the other, the seller was charging $50 shipping on an item that the post office would ship for $12 (sellers are not allowed to make a profit on shipping, all shipping charges must be reasonable). I contacted the seller about that, and he cancelled the auction, and relisted it a month later with greatly reduced shipping charges (and I won the auction).

I read "eBay for Dummies" before I did anything on eBay, and it was a great help. There is lots of information in there about resolving issues such as the one that you have.

Sellers don't want unhappy customers, because every buyer has a chance to leave feedback on every seller they deal with, and this feedback is highly visible to every potential buyer. Any seller with a feedback rating below 95% or so will have problems with future sales.

I hope this helps.

>Barry -- I only own the Nova Midi chuck from Teknatool's lineup of chucks but I know that setting up the chuck is more finicky than with my Oneway chucks. Go to the link below and download the pdf manual for the Super Nova and follow the instructions for setting up the jaws on your chuck. It may solve your problem.

>Barry,

I have five Technatool chucks and one came "way too tight" from the factory. Woodcraft swapped it without question.

Another chuck was a little tight but I disassembled it and honed a burr on the steel. It proabably would have loosened up by itself with use.

I've had one geared key that had the problem you described. It was only after much hard use on my part, perhaps abuse, perhaps a defect. Since I have other keys I didn't worry about it but I understand Technatool will replace these for free.

If the chuck is supposed to be new you could verify with a careful inspection for wear marks.

BTW, I also had one set of jaws that was not correct (they cut four jaws from one piece of machined metal and if they mix up pieces from different sets at the factory the jaws may not close properly)

In my case, the jaws were installed correctly (each one is numbered) but just made/packaged incorrectly. The store agreed they were not correct and replaced them right away.

If I ever get a metal lathe I may try my hand at making my own specialized steel jaws. It doesn't look difficult.

Thank you all

>I have read your messages and will read them again. I sent an E-mail to the seller and have not received a response. I leave in the morning to attend my son's college graduation, so I will be back Saturday and will pursue this again at that time.

I did check to see if the jaws were on in the right order and they are. (I have made that mistake before) I am disappointed in the key, unlike John, this is only my second chuck and I was pleased to get one identical to the other one so that the keys and jaws would be interchangeable.

I hope this resolves well. It has soured me on Ebay. I really prefer to walk in, inspect it, buy it and walk out, but at about half the store price, I went for it. Maybe I know now why it was half price. doesn't make sense to send it half way round the world to Tecknatool. By the time I do that, I could have bought one for full price.

Thanks again for all the help. Wood Central is a lot more responsive than the seller.

>I just ordered two Supernovas from the same guy as you. Customer feedback was very positive (the only way I'll bid if if the seller has positive feedback). Give the guy a chance to respond and if he flat out dogs you leave a nasty feedback rating. If he fixes the problem leave him a good one. If the chuck looks new to you then it looked new to him. Teknatool does have a service center in Virginia I believe and the gentleman there is very helpful. If it is a new chuck then they should fix it under warranty. My chucks should get here by the end of the week so we shall see if this is a trend or not with this guy. Either way, the fair thing to do is give him a chance to fix it first, then go from there. Also, could you post the end result here so if he isn't straight we can avoid him and if he is straight then we know he is reliable? Take it easy and goog luck, Guy

>Barry I. and Guy, I just got a Super Nova from the same guy and the one I got is definitely not right. I have several chucks, different brands, and this one is not right. There are obvious hammer marks on the body where someone must have had to pound on it to get it off of something. There are two #3 slides that the jaws mount on (no #2). Found that out when I had to reposition the jaws which were mounted out of order. This chuck is advertised as "Brand New" but does not include a manual, the woodworm screw center or the allen wrenches. The sellers feedback was all good, so I went for it as well. Too good a price to pass up. Too good to be true? Probably. If all his chucks are defective or seconds I feel sorry for the other folks who bought them. Or maybe they got the good ones of the batch. I have requested a full refund. I don't really need this chuck but it would have been nice to have one I could mount a set of 'Cole" style jaws on and leave them. Oh yeah, the 1 1/8 X 8tpi insert is actually 3/4 x 16tpi. I hope this works out for the best for everybody. I'll let you know.

>My Chuck could pass for new. There are a few very slight marks on it, but they could just be form shipping. I too got the 3/4 insert, not the one that was advertised, but I have no beef with that, because the one that was advertised would not work for me and I knew I was going to have to replace it.

I have received an E-mail response form the seller. I explained that the keeper ring int he key was crooked and the head was lopsided, that the action of the chuck was very tight and that the there was a gap between some of the jaws. His response was that the key is supposed to swivel and that I should oil the chuck and the gaps don't matter.

I have an identical chuck that came with the lathe, so I have something to compare this one to. This one does not work as well as the other one. This does not seem like the need for lubrication. No amount of lubrication is going to fix the key.

I don't want to disassemble the chuck and try to fix it for fear of putting myself in a position of being blamed for the problems.

I am waiting until I cool off before responding tot he E-mail.

>Barry, Mine both arrived yesterday and I checked them out pretty good. They both look new as do the jaws and keys. They seem to be just fine. They were a little bit stiff but I sprayed them with WD-40 and now they every bit as smooth as my old one. I didn't sweat the inserts (they came with two different sizes) but in his discription he said he believes they are 1 x 8. Moot point for me because I needed a larger size anyhow. He probably does not turn as I am sure some of our "turning" venders. They didn't have boxes, manuals, woodworm, etc. I'm guessing they are seconds, maybe, maybe not. So in the end icluding the money I spent at Woodcraft for inserts I spent less for the two than I would have spent for one at my local Woodcraft. How did yours turn out in the end? Hope it worked out, Guy

>Guy, I E-mailed him again and reiterated the problems. He wrote back and said he would replace the order, wanting this to be a happy transaction. I have responded saying to do so, but I have not heard from him. I don't know whether he is expecting me to send this on back first or what. One problem is I don't have any paper work. No invoice, nothing. The name on the box's return label was not the same as his Ebay name. I am not liking any of this and am dreading having to deal with Ebay and Paypal and him. Here's hoping.

I am glad yours came through in good condition. That is promising for me in the sense that he may have others that are in good shape for a substitute. And I agree about the insert, he did not promise a matching insert and I knew that.

Another oddity, I E-mail Tim Geist, Teknatool's Rep in North America and have not gotten a response. I am disappointed. Even a negative response would have been better than none.

I really am glad your's came through well, this experience has soured me on Ebay and Paypal.

Paypal, smaypal, I got nothing from them, no receipt, no confirmation, nothing, except offers to sign up for more.

>I would agree the guy owes you a replacement (or a refund). I dont think it is fair to blame eBay & PayPal for the problems of a product a person sells. If they are continually selling bad products and people are reporting this and no action is taken then that is a different story.

There are methods in place with both eBay & Paypal to deal with this type of problem. If the goods are not as described file the complaints.

PayPal has a buyers protection program,

http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_help-ext&eloc=1128&loc=1127&unique_id=56462&source_page=_home&flow=

They also have a dispute procedure.

If the person has indicated he will replace the item, you may need to clarify with him how this is going to happen. In my business I will not send out a replacement item without the defective item being returned first or the customer being charged for the second item, with the understanding a credit will be issued when the defective item is returned. In the beginning I tried not having this policy, not one person ever sent the item back without three or four reminders. It was always the same excuses, Im sorry Ive been real busy. I forgot, I will have my wife do it today. Strangely this has never been a problem when we have charged the customer for the replacement. The defective item always comes back in 3-7 days.

I would also make sure to return the item by an insured traceable means.

>Sorry to hear about your problems. I have never had a problem with paypal.

You said you had nothing from paypal such as a receipt or confirmation. FYI - for your need to provide some proof of transaction - Paypal does provide this information. You should have gotten an email from paypal that you made the payment.

BUT - if not - Logon to your paypal account and you should see a link for "recent activity" and "all activity" Under one of these links you will see the transaction. (unless you previously marked the "file" link) On the particular transaction you will see a link for "details". This will allow you to view and print the info in case you need to prove to Paypal or Ebay that you had problems with this guy.

Don't get too discouraged with Ebay. I have used it to sell and buy for years and only had one problem with one transaction out of hundreds of buying or selling. As far as his Ebay ID and Paypal ID being different - that's not uncommon. My ebay ID is the name of my clown character (my other hobby) not my email address which used as a paypal ID. This reduces crap I get from people surfing Ebay for email addresses to use for scams and spam.

Also, most people know me by my nickname "Ricc". Yet my legal name is Charles. Charles is the one that shows up with Paypal shipping info since the account is paid for with my credit card and I have to use it since it's on my credit card.

One last item for everyone, a radio personality - Clark Howard - who does money and investment advice really advocates using a credit card NOT a debit VIsa card for transactions. A regular credit card can be disputed with VIsa and you get your money back. Alot of debit Visa cards do not have that protection. Check the fine print on your debit card rules and regulations.

Good Luck

>Again, Thanks to all of you. I understand that I should not paint Ebay and Paypal with one bad brush just because of one transaction. My problem is that this is my only transaction on Ebay and Its not going well. Its like the fun with statistics thing. There is not much chance of getting hit by lightning, but it does not matter if you are the one that got hit.

What I actually wanted was a usable chuck. I did not want a Paypal account, but I have one because the seller wanted me to have one. I have perfectly good credit cards, but now I have a paypal account.

I don't want to go on line and check my account and click on Look Here Stupid. I just wanted a chuck. I was driven to Paypal for someone else's benefit.

I am now in limbo. I don't know whether to send the chuck back or wait for instructions. I will send it back, but I know who I am and where I live and what the limit is on my credit card, but I don't know who this Ebay seller is. I keep sending nice polite E-mails and getting no answer. Perhaps I am old school, but I would rather deal with someone I can call or find if I go looking.

I have an old original Nova chuck that I like a lot. It came with a used Powermatic lathe I bought locally. It too was assembled incorrectly. After I disassembled it cleaned and deburred it, it's perfect. I wanted to get another newer model, but I don't want to buy from the same eBay seller as you and the others did. Good luck, Pop Pop

>Barry, hang in there. I got a defective chuck also from, I believe, the same guy and asked for a refund and he was very quick and accomodating. I just don't have a way to receive money via PayPal. I decided to just have him send a new chuck that he checked out and he emailed me yesterday that a new one is on the way. I told him I will send back the bad one as I have no use for it. Give him a chance to make it right. I think he will come through for you. Maybe give him a gentle reminder to respond to your problem.

Good luck and I'll let you know what I get when it arrives.

He has changed his description on the auction site to let folks know there is no screw center or manual, etc. per my suggestion.

Re: Super Nova Chuck bought on EBAY, Help

>This is part of the problem. Someone here on Wood Central posted a message about the chucks being available on Ebay including a link. I went there and bought the chuck on impulse. I set up a Paypal account to be able to pay for the chuck, during the transaction. Being a novice at Ebay I did not print out the page or the link. I did look at his ratings and they were near 100% favorable. (I now learn that some people will not deal with anyone who has anything less than 98% or even 100%) The only thing they were selling was these chucks and now the post just after yours reports they have gotten them to change the site on Ebay to mention they do not have the box, the woodworm or, the manual. They also report, as have several others they were happy with their chuck.

I am not trying to be unreasonable, but I am not a machinist and don't want to take the chuck apart and try to deburr it or whatever. I figure I would do that and not be able to fix it and then the seller would rightfully say they would not take it bake because I took it apart.

I sent an email to the seller on May 9,05 asking what to do, in reasons to their offer to replace the chuck. I offered to return the one I have or what ever. I have gotten no response. I am somewhat reluctant to send it back, because then I would have nothing. No chuck, no invoice, nothing. At this point it is conceivable that either I or Teknatool could fix the chuck, I have the key from my existing chuck, or I might be able to fix the new one, and I have other jaws, so there is a chance I could turn this into a useful piece of equipment, but if I return this to this somewhat elusive vendor I will not have that opportunity.

I have complained about Paypal. Probably unfairly, but I see them as a cut out or disconnect between me and the merchant. I can just see trying to explain to a judge that, no, I did not give them cash, a check or a credit card, I told Paypal to do it for me. I'm not clear whether Paypal protects me or the merchant.

>The auction you won / bid on cannot have the description changed.

Both eBay & Paypal have receipts, you need to print them out, they wont be mailing you anything.

Both ebay & Paypal will help you resolve this. You need to contact them. I posted a URL for one before. If you sent an e-mail on 5/9 and not had a response from the seller I would file a complaint on the transaction with either ebay or Paypal to start forcing the issue. They will not help you if too much time has passed.
