>Check out the site. The prices seem reasonable as well. I have ordered several times and been very happy. Besides, they have a picture of almost every board so you know what to expect. You do have to patiently go through the (60+) pages to see them all as they haven't implemented a search for wood types, but there are a lot of nice boards to see.
Keep in mind as well that a 3" thick board 10" wide and 40" long can cut into 4 nice bowl blanks. I'm a big fan of Curly Bubinga and this is a great site to get it from. They also get in some realy nice Big Leaf Quilted and Curly Maple. I've seen other places charging much more for what they are selling w.r.t. the Maple with that much figure.

P.S. I've also had good dealings with Exotic Woods of Latin America (out in California). Lots of photos of actual stock on their site as well, but not as well presented as Gilmer.

>I've bought from them several times and have always been very pleased with the results. Great service and a great product. Keep in mind, however, that they do have a $100 minimum order. Not that I've ever had even remotely a problem finding $100 worth of wood there I want!
Good luck,
Mike

I don't know where you are located, but I am in Southeast TN.
I'm told by Ellis that it is O.K. to respond to direct questions about wood sources by saying, "I sell turning wood." I try to stay away from other commercial postings.
Send me an e-mail and I'll detail what I have available.

>I recently made a purchase from Gilmer and was not entirely satisfied. Nowhere on the web site did it state that in addition to shipping charges they include a $10 per package charge. So for a $150 purchase I paid $42 for shipping from Oregon to Washington. They did offer to reduce my next purchase by $20 which was generous of them. If I buy from them again I will probably drive down there and still save money despite $2.50/gal gas prices.
Their lumber is spectacular, but then so are the prices for the wild exotics. The regular lumber prices are quite reasonable. Look at Woodworker Source for some really over the top prices for regular lumber.

>It is funny you should mention Gilmers. I am in Portland right now as I type. I have been to Gilmers in the past and really liked them and they do have a great selection.
I walked into there Monday after flying in and found they had gone to a new inventory method. All the Wood was marked with a stock number. There are no longer prices or species on the wood. I asked for a price list (at least board footage costs?) and they did not have one. It is no longer the browsers paradise it once was. Yes, they have a great selection, but you have to write down each # and give it to the less than helpful staff and have them go through the big book to give you a price. I am sure shopping off of the web is now more convenient.
I walked out kind of disappointed, drove down the street to Bullseye Glass and dropped $250 on glass for fusing.
