>Here is an experiment I tried a few months ago. It's been sitting on a shelve in our kitchen and the more I look at it, the more it grows on me.

I would like to hear what you think about it.

About 3" x 3"

Green transtint dye on the outside

Black india ink on the inside

Lacquer finish

>I really like it, Ron! Doesn't even need time to grow on me, LOL. I like the shape and the combination of green, natural and black. Is it as thin as the rim appears?

>It's almost Wally thin. The largest diameter is a bit thicker. I didn't have the courage so I had to stop.

I like the balance between the darker bottom and lighter top. If the top had been wider or the bottom smaller it wouldn't have worked as well. I also think the black lines worked to help break up the mass of green. Good job

I think your form looks great. I like the dye job, very evenly applied - brushed or sprayed? Did you put a seal coat on first?

The sharp angle change at the widest point is attractive and different. It is not my personal style to include dramatic direction changes on my work, but no reason it can't be awesome on yours! It is certainly more interesting and thought provoking than the same shape with a smooth curve.

I can't help but think that the lines below the max diameter should be reflected somewhere above, just one probably, around the rim. Perhaps one defined in black but filled in with the same green you used below. I'm just thinking out loud. When you peer down into the vessel, is it all black? Would be a nice surprise to carry the same color/theme at the bottom.

BTW, this form would also look pretty cool upside down. Nice work.

>I like it. A couple of suggestions for the next one. You have a very small curve going down the body. I'd like to see the same small curved surface on the rim. The black lines are a bit heavy. One line with that thickness would work, or three thinner lines.

>Thanks for the good feedback Mike.

The dye was applied with a sponge brush directly on bare wood. I first raised the grain with clear water and sanded when it dried. I applied the first coat of dye, sanded again, then applied the last coat and sanded to 2000.

Interesting idea, green line above. Shouldn't be to hard to do.

The inside is all flat black, I was hoping to give the "appearance" of looking into a "black hole". I don't know If I accomplished that or not. I think if I did that the black wouldn't be as black and would pick up some of the green color during the application of the color. But your idea of green on the bottom raises some possibilities. Thanks for the 2 ideas!

I agree about the heavy lines. I used an the low E string (from a guitar) to burn in the lines. Lately I've been using a G string (no pun intended). The lines are thinner and looks more delicate.

>Very nice Ron.

How do you keep the dye from migrating into the undyed wood?

I have a project to do that will require 2 colors and have been wondering how I will keep them separate.

>Ron,

I really like it a lot. I'm interested in a couple of the details. 1) the bottoms of the 3 stripes appear to be flat; how did you achieve that with a round guitar string? 2) what tool did you use to dye the stripes black and keep it off of the green area? I assume you did the black before the green?

Great form. You expanded my artistic horizons.

Happy coloring,

Gary

>Hi Ron,

I like it! I'm really enjoying working with colors and also the black inks,so I'm on board with this one. It has a very modern look to it and so the straight lines of the piece really work. I think I will agree with Wally's comment about the black lines being a bit too thick though. A great looking piece!

After I died the wood I sanded though the dye on the upper part.
