>Finished this last night. Some more of that strange maple. The dark part has teeny, tiny flecks of pink in it. This is the deepest thing I have done so far and I suppose it will remain so until I can get the hang of that darn hollowing tool.
Nice little bowl. I have some maple that is very similar to that. For mine, that dark coloring was contained only around the pith and heartwood of the tree. I cannot tell for sure if that's the same case with yours? I don't know for sure, but it looked like some sort of mineral staining in the wood? I'm sure one of the tree experts here could offer a better suggestion.
The one finished piece I've done from the maple looks very much like yours. It took a very nice polish and ended up being a nice wood, albeit not what I expected when I cut into the maple!
That is pretty good turning for an older woman! Hee hee hee, I am sorry but I could not resist. I just read your experience chainsawing with the boy (or did it end up chainsawing the boy?), and it brought to mind many comments made by my own dear children regarding my own self.
In all seriousness, it has a very nice shape and finish to it. Keep up the good work!
>I pick up a lot of maple that looks like that at the dump. Most of the ambrosia chunks also have that stain in the heartwood. It seems to be in the lowerpart of the trunk and mostly silver maple.I think it is mineral stain altho some of it may be fungal.
>Mike, this tree was cut down in the parking lot of a restaurant and it had pavement right up to the trunk. (Yes, I expect nails, pieces of bumpers, rocks, bullets, etc. but I haven't found any yet.) That may have had something to do with the staining. It is primarily in the heartwood.
It looks great to me! Nice form and the finish looks really nice. I like the little foot too. Keep on turning! I know you're having fun and that's really all that matters.
>Carole, Love how smooth the inside looks. I just bought my first HF tool at the wood show last weekend....hope to give it a try soon, Thanks for the inspiration!
>Ruth, what tool did you get? Let me know how you make out with it. I don't know why I am having such a struggle...especially after all the tips and help I have received from folks here. I am getting really discouraged and thinking about trying another hollowing tool but don't know if that would make a difference since I suspect it is the operator, not the tool. (I can't afford a captured rig.)
