Read Tool Faceplate hubs and plates?

>Anyone used these? Highland Hardware has them. You buy one hub then as many interchangeable faceplates as you need. Looks like a good solution for custom chucks.

>I bought a 1"-8 tap and a 7/8" drill bit. That way I can thread my own glue blocks and other jigs that I use in my Jet Mini. If you use it for metal don't forget, tapping requires lubrication. If you have never tapped before, get some instructions.
For wood it is better to get a 'bottom tap' which allows tapping blind holes almost all the way through. The wood threads can be reinforced with some glue, and then retapped lightly.
A 7/8" hole saw - like Lennox bimetal - is good for the hole if you don't have a large drill press.
The $20 I spent on the drill and tap has saved me a lot of money.

>Carol,
I have one hub and 4-5 flanges. They work for the most part. You have to be very careful about debris getting on the hub or flange where they meet, or they will wobble. I also had a little issue where the the threaded shaft on the hub was sticking throught the flange, making it impossible for it to sit flat on the wood. A minute with a grinder and that was fixed.
All in all it works fine. My hub is for a 1x8 spindle. I have moved to using faceplates and 4-jaw chucks with my new lathe. If you are interested, I have the Read hub and some plates, as well as a bunch of 1x8 regular faceplast that I am no longer using. I will make you a deal. Email me if interested.

>Hi Carol
I use those faceplates all the time. Craft Supplies also sells them.
Two of the other nice features:
If you get a new lathe with a different spindle size a new hub will let you use the faceplates on both lathes.
When you store the faceplates or wood attached to faceplates they store with less bulk.
Right now I have 7 items on faceplates. I never "want" for a faceplate. A couple of turning friends have the system as well. They can and have taken turnings started on my lathe and completed the projects on their lathes because of the Reid system.
Good Luck
Richard
