Just Some Bottle Stoppers

TomW In SouthJersey

>I've been turning a lot of wine stoppers in between other items. Here are four recent ones. Two that I spent too much time on to make the worthwhile for selling.

Left to right:

Rosewood with Maple, Canary (lots of red stain that comes off with polishing), Bloodwood, Ambrosia Maple with goldleaf and CA to fill the voids.

Rosewood sure is pretty. All are sanded to 12,000 and finished with Mylands friction polish.

I've made over 35 stoppers recently and it has finally helped me to learn to use the Sorby Spindlemaster I thought I had wasted money on.

>Very nice. Have you thought of doing the bottle coasters to go with them so you have a matched pair? Makes a nice set.

The Spindlemaster does take a bit of getting used to but I found it very usefull once I made friends with it.

>Tom - thanks, yes I have considered the coasters but haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe that is a better way to offer the ones that take longer to make. As a set I might be able to get a better price. The coasters should be relatively quick to turn.

>Really nice! I particularly like your use of the gold leaf on the maple. I've got to get around to making some of those little dudes for stocking stuffers.

>Most coasters look just like a larger diameter drinking glass coaster. Here is one I made for a friend who wanted a larger coaster that would accommodate the large wine bottles.

I'm thinking that when I make matching ones to the stoppers I'll have raised sides on the coaster with a hole drilled at an angle to hold the stopper.

>This is a prototype I made for testing purposes. Never even put a finish on it. It is made of poplar and it works very well. The large rim will hold a stopper no problem.

I have sold all the matched sets and have no pics of them...dumb.

This is about 7" in dia and 1" tall. Very fast to turn. Quite popular as a set.

>Tom - I like the design. Do you mind if I copy it over here on the East Coast?

>No problem at all. When you make them, make sure yu use a white wine bottle as a template. They seem to be a tiny bit larger than the green red wine ones.

Have fun
